Let’s face it: almost no one is actually excited about the prospect of packing moving boxes. I’m always eager to get settled into a new place (hello, endless decorating projects!). But as someone who lived in six different apartments throughout her twenties, I’ve never enjoyed the packing process itself. It’s mentally tiresome, physically demanding, and seems to drag on—no matter how early you begin.

A Professional Organizer Shares Her Best Packing Tips for Moving

Because of this, I’ve long been looking for tips on how to streamline the process and make packing for a move slightly less daunting. For answers, I turned to Jayna Lattimore, a professional organizer and the founder of Ordered, LLC, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, Lattimore shares how to make a move less stressful—thank goodness for these tips!

Jayna Lattimore
Jayna Lattimore

Jayna Lattimore, owner and lead organizer of Ordered, LLC began her professional organizing career in 2019. Over the past 4.5 years, she’s helped countless families and organized hundreds of spaces across Charlotte, NC and surrounding areas. Without judgment, she strives to motivate her clients to embrace a more organized lifestyle by cutting down the clutter and establishing beautiful and functional organizing systems.

Don’t Make a Ton of Purchases Prior to Your Move

I began to cringe as I read this tip, as I’ve been majorly guilty of ordering everything from new furniture to coffee table books to kitchenware right before a move. I just couldn’t hold back since I was so excited to get decorating! But, Lattimore says, doing so will of course mean you have more to move to your new place, and your picks “may not align with the final setup and decor preferences in your new home.”

She adds, “Taking time to fully unpack and set up the new space allows for better decision-making regarding new furniture and decorations, preventing the hassle of returns and last-minute product research.”

I’ll be the first to admit that the cute little three drawer chest I just *had to have* for my NYC apartment didn’t look at all at home in my space once I’d moved everything else in. I ended up having to pay a hefty return fee to ship the piece back to the retailer I’d ordered it from. A pricey lesson to learn.

Don’t Wait to Prep for Your Move Until the Last Minute

Thankfully I’ve never been a procrastinator, but if you’re someone who feels that they work best under pressure, you may want to reconsider this outlook in the months leading up to your move. Yes, I said months—Lattimore recommends beginning to prep for a move two months before your lease kicks off.

First, make a to do list of pre-move tasks that you can begin to tackle over this period, such as, of course, booking your movers. Additionally, use this time to focus on one space or room at a time, Lattimore says, beginning with the spaces you use the least. “Clear out each room completely or do a deep sweep through everything, discarding items you won’t be taking to your new place,” she suggests. You’ll also want to assemble a donation box as well as make a list of what needs replacing once you’re settled into your new home.

Don’t Let Furniture For Sale Linger

I follow plenty of people on social media who post about furniture they’re looking to sell prior to a move, and in my opinion, some of these people just don’t know when to give it up and cut their losses! Posting daily for weeks on end just seems exhausting when you have so many other logistics to focus on.

Lattimore lives by a similar philosophy. “If you find items to sell, list them promptly and set a deadline for their sale,” she says. “If unsold by the deadline, consider donating to avoid unnecessary clutter.” Someone in need could greatly benefit from your generosity, and you’ll feel less overwhelmed by the presence of excess stuff in your home.

Declutter Thoughtfully

If decluttering isn’t your strong suit, Lattimore recommends asking yourself the following questions: Do I love it? Do I need it? Do I use it? Will there be space for it in my new place? She adds, “If the items don’t align with your identity and future aspirations, it’s best to part ways with them.”

Don’t Forget About Other Essential Tasks

The moving process isn’t just about packing all of your belongings into boxes—there are many logistical components that are just as key. Lattimore notes that people tend to forget about the following tasks until the last minute:

 • updating their mailing address (both by notifying the USPS as well as friends and family)
 • arranging for childcare or pet care the day of the move
 • canceling or transferring utilities
 • asking friends or family for day-of help.

Lattimore recommends taking care of this final to-do weeks in advance. “Moving is a big deal and incredibly exhausting,” she says. “No one wants to be hit with a last-minute request to help.”

Pack Like a Pro

Lattimore is full of useful packing tips that will make both the packing and unpacking process easier. Below are a few of her top suggestions:

 • Pack infrequently used items first. Think out-of-season clothes, holiday decorations, and the like.
 • Designate boxes for specific categories or rooms. It may take more time upfront but will help you in the long run, the organizer says. “Throwing different items in a box will create more of a hassle later when you’re unpacking.”
 • Pack heavier items on the bottom of the box. Then, cushion the top before sealing it, this will help when stacking boxes.
 • Label each box. A no brainer, but a necessary tip nonetheless!
 • Pack an overnight bag. This will come in handy the night you first settle into your home. “You’ll be glad you have a few changes of clothes and toiletries that you’ll need immediately, readily accessible without having to rummage through boxes,” Lattimore says.
 • Unpack one box at a time. Start with the most key rooms, like the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.

Start Out on An Organized Foot

You’ve made the effort to be nice and organized during the packing process, so be sure to keep this going as you get settled. “It’s time to set up storage solutions,” Lattimore says. “Make sure they are functional for you.” Drawer organizers, bins, and baskets are your new BFFs, and labels are always great, too.

You will also want to maintain a regular chore schedule in your new place. “We recommend decluttering your home at least two to three times a year and as needed before holidays and special events throughout the year to make room for new purchases,” Lattimore says. “Establishing simple routines like 15 minutes each day to reset your home and sort through mail keeps things from piling up and remaining out of place for too long.”

There was a time in my life when I didn’t understand the hype behind an electric kettle. Even in the colder months, Austin’s weather often has me opting for a green smoothie in lieu of a latte or tea. How to Pick an Electric Kettle

There are a couple of important elements to consider when selecting the best electric kettle. As one beverage drinker’s needs may be different than another’s, we’ve laid out the top three things you should consider before making your purchase.

Kettle Capacity

How much water are you planning on heating up? Do you drink several cups of coffee or tea? Capacity is one of the most important factors to take into consideration when choosing your perfect electric kettle. You may want to stick to a capacity of around 1.5-1.7L or more if you’re brewing for 2+ people, whereas you can most likely get by with a capacity of one liter or less if you’re aiming for 1-2 cups of your drink of choice.

Temperature Control and Boiling Speed

If you’re seeking out a kettle that can reach an exact temperature, you may need to opt for a more expensive model. But if you’re simply looking for a kettle that can keep water hot, then you may be able to find a more generic electric kettle.

Additionally, the speed at which water can heat up is a factor to consider in your selection process. If you find yourself short on time (or simply a lack of patience) when brewing your bev, look for a quick-heating electric kettle as opposed to one with a more lengthy heat time.

Selecting Your Spout

How fast or slow your water pours from the electric kettle depends on the spout size and length. If you’re looking for a slower and more precise pour, typically a long, tapered or gooseneck spout is the best option. This can also prevent spills and splashes of hot water that escape from your kettle. If you’d rather have a larger and faster pour, select a spout with a wide and short opening.

The post Designers Predict the Next “It” Kitchen Cabinet Color appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
There’s no denying that sage kitchen cabinets are having a moment (and have been for a while). From Anne Hathaway’s rustic kitchen to Reese Witherspoon’s farmhouse-inspired kitchen, seemingly everyone is opting for cabinets in the light green hue. While we’re also fans of the popular shade, we can’t help but wonder: What is the next “it” kitchen cabinet color going to be?

To find out, we asked four interior designers to predict which kitchen cabinet paint colors we’re about to see everywhere. From subtle neutrals to bold hues, the pros’ picks cover a spectrum of shades. Whether you’re looking to give your space a quick refresh or a major overhaul, keep scrolling to see which kitchen cabinet paint colors are poised to replace sage as the next big thing.

Stefani Stein Loloi Kitchen

Soft, Grey-Green

Neutrals are here to stay, but designers aren’t turning to traditional shades of white and grey. “While white kitchen cabinets have been out of favor for a while, many people aren’t ready to commit to bold or saturated hues,” explains Los Angeles-based interior designer Stefani Stein. Instead, she says it’s all about subtle shades that boast a hint of color.

She predicts soft, grey-green in particular, will be a welcome alternative to classic neutral shades. “I have been gravitating toward tints that introduce a hint of color, but still invoke a calm, classic vibe,” divulges Stein. “One of my absolute favorites is Mizzle by Farrow & Ball,” she tells us. “It’s a lovely, soft grey-green, reminiscent of celadon glazed pottery.”

Cool Mist Grey Kitchen

Cool, Mist Grey

Similarly, Delaware-based interior designer Katie Winnington of C&E Furniture and Design has been enamored with cool grey as an alternative to classic neutral hues. Her “current obsession is Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil,” she tells us. “This shade brings a slight earth tone element from the traditional grey or beige and accents brass hardware beautifully,” she says.

It’s also a hue with potential staying power, according to Winnington. “The shade is also timeless, so it has longevity and is not heavily trend-driven, giving you space to play with accenting other hardware types or countertop finishes,” she explains. “Avoid contrasting Gossamer Veil with light colors too much as the cabinets will get lost,” she advises.

White oak kitchen cabinet paint.

White Oak

Buh-bye, dark stains. A lighter, more minimalist material is emerging as a new favorite among interior designers. Leanne Ford says she’s partial to white oak, but only when done right. “Historically, the problem with white oak cabinets has been that their most beautiful state is when they’re in their natural, untouched form but then they turn yellow and orange when sealed,” the designer explains.

Ford recently partnered with Semihandmade to release a line of cabinets, and she says they managed to solve this yellow-orange dilemma. “We came up with, dare I say, the perfect ‘recipe’ for sealing white oak cabinets in a way that doesn’t alter but preserves all their natural beauty,” she explains. The option to pair them with IKEA cabinetry makes them a great affordable alternative to custom wood cabinets.

Bold Rich Green Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Bold, Rich Green

“Color is back in a major way and here to stay,” predicts Los Angeles-based interior designer Kerry Vasquez, breaking with the minimalist trend. Her pick for the next “it” kitchen cabinet color is “a rich green like Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green,” she tells us. “This green is bold yet grounding, sophisticated yet playful,” she says. It’s “bold enough to feel colorful yet subtle enough that it doesn’t overwhelm you,” she explains.

“If you go bold with the kitchen cabinet color, my recommendation for styling would be to keep everything else relatively neutral,” she offers. “However, you can still use color and keep it neutral! Think light pinks, wood tones, and terracottas.”

Finding the best white curtains for a space is easier said than done. It involves navigating a sea of inconspicuously named shades of white (think: ivory, bone, pure white, off-white), considering weight (how sheer is too sheer?), and selecting a perfect length that hits a Goldilocks ideal of being both not too short, but also not too long.

Camille Styles home tour white curtains.

The Best White Curtains, According to Designers

The stakes for getting it right are surprisingly high. The ideal white curtains will make your space feel bright and inviting versus smaller and darker than it actually is. To help narrow the search, we asked some of our favorite interior designers to tell us which white curtains they buy over and over again. And they did not disappoint.

Keep scrolling to find out which white curtains get the pros’ stamp of approval.

Kerry Vasquez Sara Tramp home with white curtains.

Restoration Hardware Italian Textured Weave Drapes in White

Los Angeles-based interior designer Kerry Vasquez swears by pleated white curtains from Restoration Hardware. “The quality is top-notch, the weight of the curtain is sumptuous, and the way the curtain falls is just right,” she explains.

“I am a big fan of contrast, so when hanging white curtains I usually opt for black wrought iron hardware like the Antique Bronze Hardware Collection at Pottery Barn,” she adds. “I am also a fan of hanging curtain rods closer to the ceiling than the window if space permits!”

One mistake Vasquez sees too often is people buying curtains in the wrong size. “Many times, clients end up getting curtains that are too small and make the room and windows appear smaller than they actually are,” the designer explains. When in doubt, opt for the longer version.

Everhem Drapes in Bone Essentials with a Pinch Pleat

If you’re ready to ditch those IKEA curtains you’ve had forever, Shaun Crha, principal designer and founder of Wrested Interiors, recommends opting for custom drapes. “Everhem is fantastic for upgrading from the big box store curtains since they make it so easy to get all the measurements and proportions right,” he says. “My go-to is their bone fabric with a pinch pleat.”

According to Crha, one add-on is 100% worth the extra money. “I always recommend getting lined panels if you want them to last longer because exposure to UV light really takes a toll on fabric,” advises the designer. Especially if you’re hanging curtains in a sun-drenched dining room, like the one pictured here, or a living room that gets an exceptional amount of light.

Hot tip: If you’re hanging curtains in your bedroom, Crha recommends a tried-and-true installation technique. “Try a French return rod if you like a classic look and you want to stop that stream of light from hitting you in the face when you want to sleep in,” he says.

Pottery Barn Custom Emery Linen Curtain in Ivory

Designer Isabella Patrick recently purchased these ivory curtains for a client who didn’t want to spend a ton on custom shades for her rental apartment. When it comes to selecting the right white curtains, Patrick recommends considering the undertones of the shade and keeping your space’s entire color palette top of mind. “This Pottery Barn option—when properly installed and styled—lifts up the room and lends to the whole upscale and warm vibe,” she tells us.

So, how do you properly install curtains? “A good rule for hanging is to install the hardware wider than the frame of the window, and don’t be afraid to go way beyond the window frame to create the illusion of a bigger window,” explains the designer. “The same goes for hanging height. You can go a few inches—or more—above your window frame to create that larger window illusion, but also to offset a ready-made curtain length that may be too long.”

The Shade Store Ripple Fold Drapery in White Linen

New York-based interior designer Becky Shea is partial to white linen curtains from The Shade Store. But in a very particular style. “My absolute favorite drapery style, without a doubt, is the ripple fold drape,” reveals Shea. “The cascading folds of a ripple fold drape embody timeless, quiet luxury.”

She also advises hanging curtains so they create a ¼-inch puddle on the floor. “It lends the drapery a more sophisticated look and feel,” she explains. “My biggest no-no is hanging drapery at the trim of a window or above the floor—never, ever do this. At a minimum, the drapery should kiss the floor, and ideally, it should puddle ever so slightly.”

Threshold™ Light Filtering Farrah Window Curtain Panel

“I’ve purchased an embarrassing amount of curtains over the years in my quest to find the perfect style, and I think I finally found ‘the one,’” says Carrie Waller of her go-to white curtains. One major selling point for Waller is that they’re sheer, but not too sheer. “These lightweight curtain panels look opaque but allow just the right amount of light to filter beautifully through,” the founder of Dream Green DIY explains.

When I joined the Camille Styles team (officially full-time this month!), I knew I’d be surrounded by inspiring women. These products have completely transformed my beauty routine. Now, I’m asking the inevitable: can I bring my entire makeup bag to the island?

Because we don’t gate-keep around here, I’m dropping every editor’s must-have desert island product in the list below. Whether you find yourself stranded on a desert island this summer (best of luck) or curating a beauty routine refresh, look no further. Consider this your insider scoop on all the beauty products our team can’t live without.

Wander Beauty Mile High Club™ Length and Define Mascara

“Finally: I’ve found the best lengthening, volumizing, and defining mascara that doesn’t leave my lashes clumpy. It’s waterproof but easy to take off at the end of the day. With just a couple of swipes, my lashes are equally lengthened and give that flirty, doe-eyed look that I’m 100% obsessed with.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

19/99 Precision Color Pencil

“Maybe controversial these days, but I’ll never give up on lining my lower eyelid! I started tightlining for a night out during the peak 90s grunge revival/indie sleaze era in high school and I’ve never given it up. I’ve gone through many an eyeliner pencil, and when you’re lining that close to your eye, you need something that glides across your lid. I’ve never used anything as effective or smooth in just one swipe than this 19/99 color pencil.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Glo Skin Beauty Oil Free Tinted Primer

Any good desert island product needs to be a multitasker—and this primer is the ultimate. It gives a lightweight coverage with a blurring effect to hide pores, nourishing skincare ingredients, plus SPF 30. I wear it on its own to work out in the morning, then layer my makeup on top during the day. Color-correcting, evening out skin tone and texture, and boosting your makeup’s wear-time—it truly does it all!” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

City Lips Plumping Lip Gloss

“I had ditched lip glosses long ago, not loving how sticky and too high-shine the majority were. But this gloss offers the perfect amount of moisture for a dewy pout. What’s more, not only does it look good, but it also offers a dramatic plumping effect immediately and then gradually builds over time. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and oligopeptides, it volumizes lips while offering major hydration.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

MERIT Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Foundation and Concealer Stick

“As someone who has previously opted for more full-coverage makeup, I haven’t worn foundation in all of 2024, thanks to MERIT Beauty’s Perfecting Stick. Marketed as not a foundation and not a concealer, this one product has replaced both in my makeup bag. I apply it under my eyes, on any blemishes, and on my high points, then blend with a brush for an even, lightweight base.” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Skincare Foundation

“This is hands down the best tinted moisturizer I’ve ever used. The formula is filled with good-for-your-skin ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, so it’s a beauty buy that doubles as a skincare product. Plus, it’s ideal for getting that dewy and glazed donut-y look.” — Megan Beauchamp, Contributing Editor

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick

“Blush is by far my favorite part of my makeup routine. I’ve perfected the ultimate three-step blush application that keeps its color and glow all day and night. The base? Westman Atelier’s blush stick in Petal. The non-toxic, creamy formula coupled with the prettiest rose-y color makes this product worth every penny. Steps two and three involve setting the cream blush with a powder blush, and topping it all off with an honorable mention, Charlotte Tilbury’s Highlighter Wand in Pinkgasm.— Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara

It’s everything you want from a mascara: elongates lashes, doesn’t pill or smudge, and—most importantly—washes off easily. You normally get one or two but not all three. I don’t know how they do it, but I’ve been wearing this mascara for 3+ years and it’s my forever go-to.” — Brittany Chatburn, Content Marketing Director

Kulfi Beauty Kajal Eyeliner in Rain Check

As someone who rarely wears makeup, it probably seems interesting that my choice for a desert island would be blue eyeliner. But on days when I just need to infuse my look with a little pop and joy, this eyeliner works its magic. I use a very thin line of blue eyeliner, but it’s just enough that when I’m talking to people while wearing it, they almost always have to stop and call out how much they love the blue. It’s the perfect way to subtly elevate your eyes, and the formula is super creamy and easy enough for even me to apply.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

Jones Road Miracle Balm

“The Jones Road Miracle Balm is a game-changer for anyone seeking a no-makeup makeup look. It is ultra-moisturizing on the face and gives an effortlessly natural look with a dewy, radiant finish. Apply it with your fingers or a brush, which makes it the perfect low-maintenance desert island product. The balm is incredibly easy to use and buildable. It’s the perfect hero product for minimalist beauty routines.” — Brandy Joy Smith, Motherhood Contributor

Chanel Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue

“There is no better lip stain on the market and I will die on that hill. I’ve been using this product for YEARS. My favorite colors are Bright Raspberry, Strawberry Red, and Soft Rose, but you can’t go wrong on any to your liking. The stain stays on ALL day and ALL night, isn’t drying with the gloss coating, and doesn’t transfer to your drinking glass or partner’s lips.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

“The Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm is nothing short of magic and would accompany me on a desert island or tropical getaway. Its buttery texture and long-lasting hydration make it the best product to always have on hand. I just repurchased it in Vanilla for the third time—it’s that good!” — Anna Decker, Social Media and E-Commerce Manager

Supergoop! Glowscreen in Golden Hour

“I am no one until I put on my Supergoop! Glowscreen in the morning. It quite literally brings me to life, adding the perfect amount of color and glow to my otherwise tired-looking face. I wear it alone on a day-to-day basis, but this sunscreen is also the perfect shimmery base for my makeup routine (even at night). Major props to Supergoop! for making sunscreen such an addicting part of my skincare/makeup routine. My skin will thank you in 20 years!” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

“Listen, I know this product had its moment in 2022. But there hasn’t been a night since I treated myself to this lip mask two years ago where I don’t put this stuff on before bed. Long story short, it’s my ride-or-die. My lips stay soft and hydrated year-round and I haven’t had chapped lips once, even in winter. My go-to is vanilla!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops

“I live for a faux glow. A bit of self tan instantly boosts my confidence and I’ve tried everything from lotions to foams to water. Hands down, my favorite is Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops. A few drops in your moisturizer turns it into a self tanner, plus you can apply it without a mitt. It’s so easy and you can control how deep your tan is by the amount of drops you use. I love!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Tower28 Beauty SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray with Hypochlorous Acid

“This product changed my life, and I can’t stop talking about it to everyone. The start of my skincare routine, a top off when my skin is feeling irritated, and a preventive measure before applying makeup so I don’t break out—I use this multiple times a day, every day. If you haven’t heard of this universal healing spray, it’s quite literally magic in a bottle.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Skin Pharm Sheer Defense SPF

When I first tried this SPF, I was in shock. A hydrating and tinted sunscreen? How? Diving in further, I saw that it contains hyaluronic acid. I love how lightweight and dewy my skin feels. If I’m on a deserted island, I’m going to need a good SPF that helps even out my skin tone for a flawless glow.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm + Red Correct

I’ve been searching my entire life for a product like Hero Cosmetics’ Rescue Balm. As someone who suffers from rosacea, regular foundation doesn’t cut it when it comes to a flawless face. This is THE product for me—and it’s always the first product I reach for on no-make, makeup days. It goes on green, with the same consistency as a concealer, but blends effortlessly into the skin, combatting any redness. It’s lightweight, and can be applied under makeup or on its own. Simply put—I couldn’t live without it.” — Casey McKee, Editorial Intern

Dr. Loretta Intense Replenishing Serum

“This ceramide serum is my secret for putting on/taking off makeup. Layered beneath my makeup, it’s the perfect primer that creates a canvas to help my products stay on all night. I use a ton of liquid-based products, so a hydrated face is key to making sure they look dewy all night and don’t dry and crack in the middle of the dance floor. And after the night ends, when I’ve scrubbed my face raw to get off all the products, I need a hydrating serum to replenish my complexion so I wake up refreshed—even after a late night. This versatile serum is both. I also slather it on my skin when my barrier needs some TLC. It’s a staple in my travel bag since it can do it all.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Bondi Sands Technocolor 1 Hour Express Self Tanning Foam

My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

Renee Rouleau Mint Renewal Cleanser

“I can’t stop talking about this product. I love it so much that my mom bought it for me when I went back to Nebraska to visit. The peppermint oil feels so refreshing and the light exfoliating jojoba beads keep my skin glowing.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Soma Ayurvedic Jasmine Body Oil

“My favorite part of my self-care routine in the evening is using body oil after a hot shower. This oil has the most incredible scent, and seamlessly absorbs into your skin, leaving it soft and hydrated. Plus, this oil makes for the most perfect, self-care moment to just pause and breathe. It’s definitely a little bit of a splurge, but it’s well worth it for how amazing it makes me feel.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

DERMAFLASH LUXE+ Advanced Sonic Dermaplaning + Peach Fuzz Removal

“My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

The post Calling All Hot Sleepers—These Summer Bedding Ideas Were Made for You appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Summer is here, and with it comes al fresco dining, fun beach reads, and, yes—sweaty, sleepless nights. Hot sleepers, you know what we’re talking about. But we’ve all experienced evenings when an open window is just no use, your fan (even though it’s working overtime) feels like it’s just blowing hot air around the room, and you just can’t quite get comfortable despite all your tossing and turning.

Summer Bedding Ideas to Stay Stylish and Cool

For summer bedding ideas that make hot nights bearable and, dare we say, enjoyable, we tapped Genevieve Rosen Biller, cofounder of the Australia-based linen bedding company Bed Threads. Because the right set-up can make all the difference. “Temperature has a substantial impact on the quality of your sleep, and it’s difficult to get comfortable when you feel too hot,” she explains. “Lightweight, breathable bedding in natural fibers will help you to stay cool and ensure you have a good night’s sleep. There’s nothing worse than tossing and turning in sweaty sheets.” (Agreed!)

Ahead, Genevieve fills us in on how to make the perfect summer bed, including some of her go-to products from Bed Threads.

Genevieve Rosen Biller, founder of Bed Threads

Genevieve is one of the founders of Bed Threads, a company that offers high-quality, 100% French flax linen bedding that is affordable, accessible, and sold in convenient sets.

What are the best fabrics for curating a bed for hot summer nights?

While cotton is a natural material, good-quality cotton sheets have a high thread count. This can compromise their breathability as the threads are woven tightly together so the air can’t move through them easily, and heat can become trapped at night.

Linen, on the other hand, is one of the lightest and most breathable fabrics on the market, keeping cool air circulating through its loosely woven fibers. It also contains a higher moisture absorbency, making it the perfect choice for anyone who hates a sweaty night’s sleep.

What bedding do you recommend stowing during the summer season?

In summer, I recommend stashing away unnecessary blankets and throws and opting for more lightweight bedding that can be layered if warmth is needed and removed if too hot. It’s also time to put away your heavy down duvet insert in favor of a temperature-regulating one or try a quilted bed cover instead for that cozy feeling without the heaviness.

What simple swaps can people make so they don’t have to invest in an entirely new sheet set?

Swapping heavy covers like blankets and duvet inserts for lighter ones or even sleeping with just a top sheet in a natural fibre is a simple swap you can make to stay cool while you sleep.

Investing in 100% French flax linen sheets will also serve you year-round, as linen is naturally temperature regulating, meaning it takes its cues to what’s going on both on your body and in the air around you and adjusts its heat accordingly. For this reason, it keeps you cool in summer and toasty in winter, so you can sleep in the same sheets regardless of the season.

What are your go-to bedding products for summer?

In the fall and winter months, I tend to opt for cosy, earthy hues, so I welcome the change of season by switching up the color scheme to a palette of cooling tones, like mineral and sage. I also really love a neutral look for summer, and our newest colorway, creme, is luxurious and elegant. If bright colors are more your style, nothing says summer quite like a vibrant wildflower duvet paired with fresh white sheets.

On the nights that I find a duvet is too hot, a quilted bed cover is great as a lighter alternative, and I also love our muslin throws for those nights I need an extra layer without adding excessive bulk or warmth—they’re so lightweight and soft.

How do you feel about top sheets? Give us your hot take.

I love the look and feel of a top sheet and think it’s the ideal addition for balmy summer nights to have something covering me when it feels too hot or constricting to have a duvet on. It’s really a matter of personal preference though. Certainly, we are finding some people choose to forgo the flat sheet for a modern aesthetic that is neat and simple, and skipping the flat sheet means making the bed is much quicker in the mornings!

Any additional tips for staying cool on hot summer nights?

Create a cool, dark environment by keeping curtains and blinds closed during the day to stop the sun warming up your room. Keep a window cracked and your door open if you can, to help air circulate through your room late at night. If you have aircon, keep the doors to rooms you don’t use closed so your cool air can flow into the areas you are spending time in. And finally, the fabric you wear to bed matters, too. Wearing pajamas in a lightweight fabric like French flax linen will help you to feel cool and comfortable.

Tell me if you can relate: Your Pinterest feed is filled with beautiful images of organized pantries and kitchens that feel just a little… too perfect. I can’t be the only one who sometimes looks at her social feeds and wonders if other people don’t cook in their kitchens. Truly: after a productive meal prep sesh and a few days making even the simplest of lunches, I sometimes feel like my kitchen has been *through* it.

With some research, testing, and learning about the layout and organization of my kitchen cabinets and drawers, I realized all that was stressing me out was poor planning and a lack of systems to make my space function as best it could.

When it comes to kitchens, no one’s space looks the same. We approach food differently, so of course, your kitchen setup needs to work for you! Luckily, to get some inside tips that all of us can benefit from, we tapped Ellen Bennet, the founder of Hedley & Bennet and host of Kitchen Glow Up, to give us the inside scoop on how we can most effectively and intentionally approach our kitchen design.

ellen bennett - how to stock your kitchen like a chef
Ellen Bennett

Ellen Bennett is the founder and Chief Brand Officer of Hedley & Bennett, a trailblazing kitchen essentials company. A multi-hyphenate, Ellen balances her roles as business owner, chef, TV personality, home renovator, wife and mother of two.

Storage is a key element of the kitchen. What is your approach?

After my kitchen is set up to function at its best capacity, I can start thinking about how to make it look good. In a professional kitchen, the zones include prep, cook, serve, store, and clean. I love to keep that setup in my home kitchen, too. My prep station is always ready on my counter with my giant cutting board and my Hedley & Bennett knife set.

Functionality is the number one priority of my kitchen.

For my storage area, everything has to be easy to find and read the labeling so it’s easy to grab while I’m cooking. I love having two sinks, especially one extra-large one that all-sized dishes can fit into. You might have specific passions that will adjust your stations differently. It’s easy to customize and prioritize these zones and stations while still keeping structure in the kitchen.

Megan Roup kitchen.

What ingredients do you always keep on hand?

I always have a protein in the freezer: ground beef, ground turkey, or bone-in chicken. Eggs and cans of tuna are other proteins I always like to have on hand. I also have rice in my Zojirushi so there’s always fresh rice going. Avocado is always at the ready and some sort of lettuce or leafy green and pickle in the fridge.

With these ingredients, I can cobble together a rice bowl and customize it based on what else I have on hand. I also always have cooked beans in the fridge. I like to have an assortment of veggies that are easy to steam. For fresh veggies, I have Persian cucumbers that I can easily add to a bowl or eat as I’m running out of the house. I also have onions, shallots, and some kind of citrus to add flavor to whatever dish I’m throwing together. Other staples are olive oil, Fly by Jing’s chili crisp, and good butter. Between all of that, I can make all kinds of things easily.

Camille Styles kitchen.

What are your go-to storage tips?

I have clear basket bins on the bottom right part of the fridge that are designated just for veggies. I take all produce out of their packaging and put them on a cloth. This helps avoid moisture and makes them last longer. Clear containers are a must to help me see the items I have in my fridge.

If you can see it, you’ll eat it.

What are your must-have spices?

Peppercorns, Maldon salt, and kosher salt are musts. Diaspora has high-quality, ethically sourced spices. I recommend getting whole seeds of spices when you can. Powders can be pretty old by the time you get them, which makes them lack flavor. If you have the whole seed, you can crush them, grind them, or toast them and it’s much tastier. Botanica has a spice called Magic Spice that’s amazing to have on hand. Garlic powder, sumac, and za’atar are great as well.

Fresh produce kitchen counter.

What are your best pantry organization tips?

Stick to one type of container! Don’t have every single thing in the original container you bought it in. You can buy a set of containers on Amazon for dirt cheap. It’s easier on the eye and easier for things not to get lost. If you haven’t used it in the last six months to a year, get rid of it. I tend to land with a bunch of random stuff, so just try and be honest with yourself about the spices you’re going to use and get rid of the rest.

It’s okay to not have every single spice you’re ever going to need for every random recipe you’ll use.

I would also use the same label for all the spices. The more variation you add, the harder it is to look at. Labeling them is important. You can also buy a little museum putty to keep them in place so they don’t move when the drawer gets opened.

Kitchen pantry.

What do you consider kitchen essentials?

I would consider the following to be my kitchen non-negotiables:

 • Fish spatula/spatula
 • Whisk
 • Tongs
 • Larger-than-normal spoon that can be used for tasting, serving, and plating
 • Microplane/zester
 • Set of knives—chef’s, utility, and bread (make sure they’re sharp!)
 • A good cutting board and a nice stack of kitchen towels. (Put those towels under the cutting board to hold them in place.)

What specialized kitchen appliances do you think are worth the splurge?

Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of single-use tools. A good tool should be used in more than one capacity. For example, I could use a zester in place of a garlic press. There may be some things on a very specific occasion, such as a cherry pitter if you’re baking a pie, but I generally like to keep these items multi-use.

What have you learned from helping others renovate and reorganize their kitchens?

The power of a dedicated pantry is real because you’re able to look at all the food you have versus not knowing what’s in each cabinet. Having expired foods out of your kitchen is major. People don’t realize how much expired food exists in their lives until they go through and remove it all.

Kitchens are a magnet for random stuff that you don’t need in that space. Give everything a parking spot and it will help you start taking things out of your kitchen that don’t belong there and move those items to its parking spot elsewhere in your home. This will end up giving you so much more space in your kitchen and will impact your daily cooking life and beyond.

Could Dopamine Be Causing Your Low Libido? An Expert Explains the Link https://camillestyles.com/design/dopamine-and-sex/ https://camillestyles.com/design/dopamine-and-sex/#respond Wed, 29 May 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=268681 Prepare for a mic drop.

The post Could Dopamine Be Causing Your Low Libido? An Expert Explains the Link appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
With dopamine detoxes continuing to dominate the wellness space, many misunderstand the trend as eliminating dopamine from our lives altogether. First, that’s impossible—given that dopamine is naturally produced by the body, we can’t detox from it completely. What’s more, it would ignore all the good dopamine does for us. The neurotransmitter is far-reaching in its influence over our decision-making and behaviors. Dopamine is linked to our pleasure and reward system, and it plays a key role in how we experience joy and satisfaction. Enter: the connection between dopamine and sex.

Camille Styles making bed.

The Connection Between Dopamine and Sex

In truth, I knew little of the link between dopamine and sex before chatting with the team at Juna, a women’s wellness brand offering plant-powered products to optimize mind, body, mood, and sleep. Detailed in an article on the topic, they outline the relationship between dopamine, love, and sex:

“The necessity of dopamine in our lives can be attributed to its influence on motivation, the pleasure and reward system, mood regulation, and attention […] The pleasure and reward system, intricately linked with love, relies heavily on dopamine to create feelings of enjoyment and reinforcement.”

Jewel Zimmer, a certified brain health trainer and the CEO and founder of Juna, elaborates on the correlation, “When your dopamine levels are high, it can increase feelings of arousal and desire—things we often associate with libido. Conversely, low dopamine levels may decrease libido, since it can reduce feelings of pleasure and motivation.

For more insights into the topic, I tapped Zimmer for her expertise. Ahead, we discuss all things dopamine and sex: how to respond to a lagging libido, and her eight top tips for naturally increasing dopamine levels—and in turn, your sex drive. Hot.

She’s passionate about educating on optimal gut/brain axis, the connection between the two and helping people implement daily habits to reach their health goals. Understanding Your Libido

Boosting your sex drive is the topic of many a magazine article and girl chat. Who doesn’t want a healthy sex drive? It’s associated with everything from pleasure (of course) to pain relief, better sleep, and increased intimacy with your partner. But! It’s also natural for your libido to fluctuate. That said, you may be looking to spice things up. For that, we have answers.

Zimmer is quick to preface that when it comes to your libido, dopamine is just a single piece. “Your libido is influenced by many different factors, including hormone balance, stress, relationship dynamics, and your overall health,” she notes. If shifts in your sex drive are of concern, she recommends speaking with a healthcare provider to explore potential causes and treatments.

How to Naturally Increase Libido

When it comes to increasing your libido, Zimmer encourages a holistic approach. She cites the following ideas to address a low sex drive:

 • Regular exercise
 • Eating a balanced diet
 • Managing stress through relaxation techniques
 • Getting enough quality sleep
 • Consult a healthcare provider about incorporating herbs like maca root or ginseng
 • Communicating openly with your partner
 • Limit alcohol use
 • Maintain a healthy weight
 • Prioritize activities that bring you pleasure and relaxation

Zimmer also suggests speaking with your healthcare provider for more personalized advice. “The healthier you feel overall,” she says, “the more likely you are to be improving that web of factors that influence libido.”

8 Tips to Increase Dopamine

Fun fact: roughly 50% of dopamine production occurs in the gut. As such, it’s important to prioritize gut health, which is linked to everything from relieving stress to boosting mood. (Key elements of a strong libido.) I also religiously take Juna’s Gut Therapy supplement for optimal gut health.

Read on for Zimmer’s tips to help you naturally increase dopamine levels. Keep in mind that with all of these tips, balance is key. “Moderation is essential to maintaining a healthy balance in lifestyle habits to support overall well-being.”

 1. Exercise. Regular physical activity can boost dopamine levels. Aim for activities you enjoy, such as jogging, dancing, or playing sports, as they also increase endorphins.
 2. Healthy diet and dopamine-inducing foods. Include sources of tyrosine, such as lean proteins, dairy, eggs, nuts, and seeds, in your diet. Dark chocolate is another great dopamine booster that’s also highly regarded for its aphrodisiac qualities.
 3. Sleep. Getting enough high-quality sleep helps regulate dopamine levels.
 4. Stress management. Chronic stress can deplete dopamine. Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or spending time in nature. Grounding is a great way to boost dopamine.
 5. Community. Positive social interactions and bonding with others can increase dopamine release. Make time for meaningful connections with friends and family.
 6. Fall in love. When you experience love, the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of your brain becomes active, releasing dopamine. Dopamine is famous for its involvement in romance.
 7. Music and creativity. Creativity or listening to music you enjoy stimulates dopamine release.
 8. Setting and Achieving Goals. Accomplishing tasks or setting and achieving goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and boost dopamine levels.

1. Best Teak Chaise Lounge: Pottery Barn Lanai Teak Outdoor Chaise Lounge

Pottery Barn Lanai Teak Outdoor Chaise Lounge

When it comes to outdoor chaise lounges, Camille loves the look of clean lines and teak wood, which is why she recommends the Lanai Teak Outdoor Chaise Lounge from Pottery Barn. The platform lounge chair is made of FSC-certified wood, which means it’s sustainably sourced lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. It’s also outfitted with thick 100% Olefin fabric cushions, and you can choose from four neutral colors to best match your outdoor space (charcoal, stone grey, faye ash, or faye sand).

The backrest of the lounge chair is adjustable to four different heights, while the thick platform of the natural wood is a stand-out feature. While teak furniture requires care and indoor storage in the colder months, this luxurious chaise lounge is well worth the cost and upkeep to transform your space into an outdoor oasis.

Camille’s Design Tips: Finding a cozy spot to place your loungers is key when designing your outdoor space, so think of it as an outdoor living room. You can also complement the loungers with stools that can act as tables for drinks.

The Specs:

 • Dimensions: 27.5 x 79 x 12 inches
 • Material: Teak
 • Weight: 80 pounds
 • Weight Capacity: 250 pounds

If our above recommendation from Pottery Barn is out of your budget, Camille also suggests this West Elm Telluride Outdoor Chaise Lounge. It’s around $1,000 less with a similar design that uses mahogany and eucalyptus wood instead of teak. Thanks to its moisture resistance, this wood combination isn’t as finicky as teak, but you should still store it inside in the cooler months.

The chaise’s box-like, oversized frame adds an air of luxury, which contrasts nicely with the substantial, weather-resistant cushions. The backrest can recline at three different heights, including all the way down, and the chair also uses FSC-certified wood. With the chaise, you can get white glove delivery, so you don’t have to worry about moving or setting it up. And while the included chaise cushions only come in two colors—slate and alabaster—you can choose from a wide range of cushion cover colors to mix it up in the future.

The Specs:

 • Dimensions: 33.7 x 81 x 33.7 inches
 • Material: Mahogany and eucalyptus wood
 • Weight: 117 pounds

Camille loves woven materials, and this chaise lounge from Frontgate is similar to the one she has at her house. With a teak frame and a wicker seat, it’s a great option for those seeking a more rustic, beachy style. Because of its minimalist design, the chaise lounge is less than 60 pounds, making it easier to move around, whether you’re following the sun or placing it in storage.

The woven back is also more breathable, which is a blessing in warmer weather (and it also means that you won’t have any pesky cushions to worry about cleaning!). Because this chaise lounge is made with high-quality teak—and the price tag reflects that—it’s sure to last a long time when taken care of properly.

The Specs:

 • Dimensions: 78.8 x 35.5 x 15 inches
 • Material: Teak
 • Weight: 58 pounds
 • Weight Capacity: Not stated

Other Outdoor Chaise Lounges to Consider

CB2 Pinet Teak Outdoor Double Chaise Lounge

CB2’s elegant Pinet Teak Outdoor Chaise Lounge is available as both a single and double chaise. With its beautiful, modern style, the teak chaise lounge has durable cushions that are quick-drying, UV-resistant, and water-repellant. However, because of its high price tag, you’re better off opting for a similar style for thousands of dollars less.

Frontgate Soleil Chair

If durability is your top priority, the Frontgate Soleil Chair is perfect for lounging poolside and even in shallow water. The unique mod-style is still sleek and doesn’t require any assembly—plus it’s super comfortable and comes recommended by House Beautiful as one of the best pool lounge chairs you can buy. Unfortunately, this style may not match everyone’s aesthetic, and the chair still sports a pretty hefty price tag despite its relatively simple style.

EQ3 Cape Outdoor Chaise

Recommended by The New York Times, the EQ3 Cape Cod Outdoor Chaise has a fairly bare-bones aluminum frame and sling that’s great for someone looking for simplicity in their outdoor furniture. The chaise has wheels for easy moving around and its back is adjustable. Despite all that, given its convenience, the chair is just a little too simple to warrant its almost $800 price.

Serena & Lily Salt Creek Chaise

If you’re looking for something outside of the box, this coastal-chic chaise lounge from Serena & Lily is just the thing. Also recommended by The New York Times, the chair’s aluminum frame is wrapped in rope for an almost nautical feel. While the chaise is no doubt a charming piece of patio furniture, it’s a unique style that may not fit every outdoor space—plus it comes with a higher price tag than most aluminum framed chaises.

What to Know About Outdoor Chaise Lounges

Aesthetic chaise lounges

Things to Consider When Choosing an Outdoor Chaise Lounge

The search for outdoor furniture is a little more complicated than shopping for a new sofa or dining table. Here are some factors to keep in mind as you consider your options.

Design

Aesthetics aren’t the end all, be all for outdoor furniture—you can always choose function over design if that’s your priority. But an elegant-looking chaise lounge is perfect for outdoor entertaining in the warmer months, whether you’re a frequent host of large dinner parties or intimate gatherings. Keep in mind the style of your current outdoor furniture (if you have any) before taking the plunge on a chaise lounge.

Price

High-end outdoor furniture can cost thousands of dollars, but if you’re sticking to a budget, it’s easy to find a piece for a few hundred too. If you have your heart set on a certain style, try looking around at different brands for similar options at varying price points to narrow your search. While a more expensive chair may be made of high-quality, long-lasting materials, a cheaper alternative can last a long time and look just as good if you’re willing to put in the effort to maintain it.

Comfort

Whether you plan to lounge by the pool or recline while watching the sunset, an outdoor chaise lounge should be comfortable enough to put your feet up and relax. It may be hard to find models to test in person before buying, so be sure you’re able to return the lounge chair if it doesn’t meet your desired comfort level.

Material

The material will not only dictate the look, cost, and comfort of your chaise lounge, but also how durable and weather-resistant it is. Some materials, like teak, must be stored indoors and can stain easily, while other hardier materials can be left out year-round. You should also invest in covers to protect your outdoor furniture, but be sure that you have the storage space before purchasing if needed.

How to Clean Outdoor Chaise Lounge Cushions

While outdoor cushions tend to be very durable, they require careful maintenance to avoid damage. Generally, these cushions are not machine washable and need to be kept dry and covered to avoid mildew and stains, but you should always check the cleaning instructions beforehand.

To spot clean, you can make a gentle mixture of either vinegar and water or soap and water. However, if the manufacturer has specific instructions for cleaning your chaise lounge, be sure to follow those.

How to Recover Outdoor Chaise Lounges

Refurbishing your old chaise lounge can be a simple or complicated process, depending on the chair’s design. For example, some chaises have removable cushions that you can simply replace or repair. Others may need to be essentially reupholstered either by a professional or as a DIY project. Consider the original price of your chaise lounge in comparison to the repairs before making the investment.

Without question, the coffee table is one of the best places to express creativity and make a design statement in the living room. It’s a little like lipstick at the end of your makeup routine: a quick final step, but one that makes all the difference. However, finding coffee table decor ideas that are a little outside-the-box can be stressful for many of us. (Self included.) But since I’ve been wanting to freshen up my own, I reached out to a few of my favorite interior designers and asked if they’d spill their best foolproof coffee table decor ideas.

Ro Miller Rynd of RM Rynd Interiors puts it best: “The coffee table is often the centerpiece of the space, so we should treat it with respect.”

One common thread throughout these expert coffee table decor ideas is to fill it with things that feel personal to you. Whether that be a functional design that can (stylishly) house remotes and other small items, a stack of colorful books, or fresh flowers—the goal is to make it your own. According to Penelope Bianchi of McCormick Interiors, decorating your house should be like writing your autobiography; nothing should be fake or contrived. Amen!

Designers Share 12 Essential Coffee Table Decor Ideas

Read on for 12 coffee table decor ideas from the following interior designers to create a coffee table that speaks to your style.

Modern coffee table.

1. A Strong Foundation is Key

When styling a coffee table, Sarah Peddicord starts with the foundation. A ceramic, leather or textured tray will both ground the coffee table and give the foundation for layering opportunities on the table. Next, she suggests playing around with adding different ceramic vases that can hold flowers, giving the coffee table height. This can also be achieved by adding unique sculptural elements, matchstick holders, and other treasured elements, all of which give the table a lived-in look.

2. Appeal to All the Senses

Shazalynn Cavin Winfrey believes that the best coffee tables appeal to all of our senses. They are tactile and display items we can touch; they include things that smell wonderful like candles or scented wax sculptures; they have a small vessel for your favorite candies, and they are also visually interesting. Pro tip: Look for pieces that double as conversation starters.

3. Think in Odd Numbers

This is a common rule of design but Peddicord encourages anyone who’s arranging coffee table decor to consider it in the preliminary stages. Depending on the size of the table, she recommends having three or five different elements. It’s also important to note that every part of the table should be the same. Remember juxtaposition creates tension that engages the eye and is much more visually appealing than a table that’s one-note.

4. Showcase Your Books and Arrange Bindings in Different Directions

While Cindy Witmer Olrik agrees with the odd numbers rule, she makes an exception with square coffee tables. She loves using beautiful books and wants to showcase them on every corner. Arranging the bindings in different directions, usually facing the seat closest to that side, topped with “the prettiest little objet d’art that I can get my hands on” makes a perfect setting. Check out some of our favorite coffee table books here

5. Divide the Table Into Balanced Quadrants

Once you’ve divided your table into quadrants, Ro Miller Rynd suggests placing items in each of them to achieve visual balance. They do not need to match each other, but you’ll want to use things that take up similar space. For example, if you use a stack of books in one quadrant, you will want to use a plant or bowl of similar size in the quadrant diagonal from it.

Clean modern living room.

6. Think of Your Table as Your Autobiography

This is Penelope Bianchi’s decorating philosophy. Her entryway table is full of antiques she’s collected throughout her travels—they’re beautiful and great conversation starters. Similarly, Winfrey suggests using trays and glass boxes to hold collections that evoke an emotional response from the owner. She once designed a coffee table for a family with enclosed specimen trays to house items they collected on nature walks nearby. Never be afraid to use non-traditional, personal elements.

7. Curate Your Decor Items to the Space

Another one of Rynd’s tried and true coffee table decor ideas is to use items that relate to the space. For example, use design or art books in a common area, but use sports or travel books in a men’s library. She also suggests layering books from largest to smallest on the top. Select favorite accessories such as bowls, candlesticks, plants, or succulents for the other quadrants, and finish off with small accessories placed on top of books.

Three coffee tables.

8. Use the Rule of Threes

Abbe Fenimore likes to style coffee tables using the rule of threes. This entails arranging items in odd numbers for a visually dynamic aesthetic. This is perfect for adding interest to a large square coffee table, plus it leaves a little space to kick your feet up. Don’t feel like you need to fill up every inch of the coffee table either.

9. Fresh Flowers Are Your Friend

This is the number one thing I heard from designers when it comes to coffee tables. According to Abbe Fenimore, an age-old styling trick (and still a favorite of hers) is to add fresh flowers. “They will instantly add life and soften up the area,” she notes. Fresh flowers appeal to all five of the senses and can be changed with the seasons. Peddicord also loves decorative branches to create a foraged look.

Eclectic coffee table decor ideas.

10. Employ the Triangle Method

Holly Lydick styles her coffee tables in the shape of a triangle. This is different from the rule of threes, as it applies to height. Start with a taller accessory, such as a box or a plant, and tier down to a lower height accessory, such as a small tray, and then a final, third-tier even lower. This helps to maintain balance and consistently draws the eye downward.

11. Try Two

If you’re looking for an option with maximum functionality but also want to showcase your style, try out a two-tiered coffee table. Lydick recommends using one with a glass top. Here you can curate a collection of antique tortoise boxes on a tray or stack your favorite books detailing their beautiful bindings on the open end, while still leaving open space up top.

12. Don’t Be Afraid to Change It Up

Rynd reminds us that we’re not married to one look. Feel free to add new items as you like from your travels or as the seasons change. When you’re entertaining, subtract items as you need for extra space. Your coffee table can always be evolving which makes it a favorite and reasonable spot to modify. Lydick similarly advises making sure that any groupings still allow room for entertaining—creating space for coffee, wine, appetizers, etc.

Our Favorite Coffee Table Decor

From candles to design books to decorative objects—these are a few of our favorite things that we always keep out on the coffee table. Remember: when curating your coffee table aesthetic, less is always more. Be thoughtful and discerning with what you display and consider how the various components play together to create the vibe you want.

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to tackle those annoying jobs you tend to skip over the rest of the year. We’re talking about cleaning the baseboards, shampooing the rugs, and laundering the curtains—all things that are very difficult if you’re having to maneuver around piles of clutter. As someone who moved two years ago and still has small stacks of stuff sprinkled throughout my home, this is my reality. A spring declutter can be just as satisfying as a spring clean, and both can make for a very rewarding and fulfilling home refresh.

Camille Styles sitting at coffee table - decluttering checklist.

The Ultimate Decluttering Checklist to Clean Sweep Your Space

I chatted with Natalie Ron, a professional organizer and founder of Swoon Spaces to get the scoop on all the things to declutter before you dive into a deep spring clean. As a professional, she’s seen it all, and her organization tips are simple and straightforward. Read on to check out our essential decluttering checklist that is sure to create calm amidst the chaos this season at home.

Expired Skincare and Beauty Products

If your medicine cabinet is overflowing with serums, makeup, and other toiletries, there’s probably a good chance that some of it has expired. Plus, you may have more products that you actually use. If this rings a bell, Ron suggests that it’s time to purge.

“Start with the products you’ve never really reached for after using once or twice in the last year,” she suggests. “If you don’t reach for them, it means you’re not really in love with the product. If you can trace back to a year or more since you purchased it, it’s time to let it go to make space for something new that you actually like using.”

In addition to tossing products you don’t use, makeup and skincare all have expiration dates. Makeup will typically have a number followed by an M on the packaging, which indicates how many months the product is good for. (If you see a 6M on a mascara tube, that means it’s good for 6 months.) In general, it’s a good idea to toss anything more than a year old if it’s open. If you’re not sure, see if the product has an odor. If it smells off, throw it away.

Calm bedroom decluttering checklist.

Old Linens

I admit, my linen closet is a bit of a disaster. It’s overflowing with extra sheets and dingy towels that are a little worse for wear. Ron says these are fantastic items to purge and has a hack that will keep your linen closet orderly all year long.

“The rule of thumb is to have only one extra set of sheets for each human in your household,” she states. “If you share a bed with your partner, you should only have one extra set of sheets for your bed. You only need one set of guest sheets per bed and one extra set of towels for each guest or person living at home.”

Torn sheets and towels are usually welcome donations at animal shelters, or if they’re in good shape, posting them to buy nothing groups is another option. Don’t get rid of all of them though. “You may want to keep one old towel for a pet whenever they get wet or get a bath!” Ron suggests.

Woman reading.

Chipped or Outdated Mugs

Ron has organized many kitchens and knows a thing or two about the kind of clutter that piles up here. “Mugs are a very common household item most people accumulate,” she shares. It makes sense, as mugs make fun souvenirs, and are generally corporate gifts from employers. You may not love every mug you own, and the good news is they’re relatively easy to declutter. “Only keep the mugs that are meaningful to you and keep the set of mugs you may have that actually match,” she encourages.

Woman in kitchen.

Food Storage Containers

Who doesn’t have a kitchen cabinet full of mismatched food storage lids and containers? It’s quite normal to have a pile of storage containers with lost lids, or even warped plastic. “It’s always fun to do a quick sweep of your kitchen to remove the unnecessary clutter, and Tupperware that doesn’t have a lid match is an easy win,” Ron exclaims.

Take all of your storage containers out of the cabinet and make sure they each have a lid that goes. If your containers are plastic, check to see that the lids actually fit on top securely and that they don’t have any lingering food odors, since plastic is porous. Better yet, decide to invest in glass containers if you haven’t already. These containers will last much longer, and are gentler on the environment as well.

Plastic Utensils and Sauce Packets

Take out dinners come in clutch when schedules are extra busy, or you’re just craving pad thai from your favorite spot. If you have a drawer full of ketchup packets and take out napkins, this is a great spot to sort through. And Ron says you don’t need to get rid of all of it. “Leave one or two plastic utensil packets, disposable chopsticks, and sauce packets, then toss the rest,” she says.

Socks

A spring closet clean-out is a must, especially since you have to put away winter clothing anyway. Even if you don’t make it a huge purge, there is one item in your closet that Ron says you can definitely declutter.

“As an organizer, socks are by far the most abundant category of clothing that can always be edited down by 50% easily,” she says. “We all have mismatched socks, and accumulate too many.”

If your sock drawer is overflowing, Ron suggests tossing socks that no longer have matches, and narrowing your collection down to between 15 and 20 pairs total. If the additional socks are in good condition, they can be donated. “Fun fact: socks are the most in demand for families in need and aren’t donated nearly enough,” she shares.

Clean shelves - decluttering checklist.

Dry Cleaning Hangers

While you’re in your closet, toss any metal hangers you still may be holding onto from the dry cleaners. “In my time as an organizer, it still surprises me how many metal hangers from the cleaners are left in our client’s homes,” Ron says. “Get rid of those as soon as you get home with your dry cleaning. If you still have some left, take a few minutes to remove them.”

If you haven’t already invested in matching hangers, whether they’re velvet or wood, spring would be a great time to give your closet a refresh by doing just that. “It makes a huge difference in the look of your closet, but more importantly, the way you experience your closet and clothing daily,” Ron explains.

Old Gift Wrapping and Stationary

It can be tricky to know what seasonal items can be decluttered, especially since you only need specific items at certain times of year. If you have a spot in your home for gifting, Ron recommends doing a quick sweep of all of the items you have gathered over the years.

“Discard small bits of wrapping paper, ribbon and name tags that aren’t in great shape anymore,” she says. “Only keep the items that you know you can use in the upcoming year, and make sure to use them!”

The post 7 Simple Ways to Refresh Your Home This Spring, According to Designers appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
No matter how much you love your home, refreshing your space with the seasons is invigorating. Since we’re constantly evolving, it makes sense that our styles, preferences, and interests shift and change with time. If you take a look around your home and notice some spots that could use an overhaul—spring might be the perfect time to change things up. Especially if a shift could bring more peace and calm to your life.

Designers Share: How to Refresh Your Home For Spring

Take it from the pros—this season is prime time for makeovers, deep cleans, and organization sprees. They’re not only working on refreshing their client’s homes but their own homes as well. I chatted with interior designers Karen Wolf of K+Co Living, Andi Morse of Morse Design, and Jenna Morrow of Morrow Design Studios to get to the lowdown on a spring home design refresh. Read for expert tips on how to breathe new life into your space this season.

They’re Embracing Coastal Grandma Aesthetic

The Coastal Grandma aesthetic burst onto the scene in 2022, as Lex Nicoleta coined the phrase on TikTok, and the love of easy breezy, coastal style is still going strong. “I love the coastal grandma aesthetic,” Wolf shares. “Despite not being a grandmother myself, or living on the water, I prefer a relaxed, soft muted palette with woven textures and natural materials mixed in.”

Try It Yourself: To perfect the aesthetic this spring, swap darker colors for soft blues and neutrals, add rattan or wicker accents, and place a large vase of white hydrangeas on your kitchen table for ultimate Something’s Gotta Give vibes. Diane Keaton is the inspo behind the movement after all.

They’re Adding Fragrance

Layering scent into your home can be so powerful, as fragrance can be used to completely shift the atmosphere of a space—perfect as the seasons change. “I like to refresh my bathrooms by adding fresh room diffusers,” Morse says. “I tend to infuse ones that look more like sculptures as they blend more with the aesthetic and decor rather than stick out.”

Try It Yourself: There are a variety of plug-in diffusers, reed diffusers, and candles you could use. Consider how you want you and your guests to experience each room as you decide on a home fragrance. Pay close attention to how each scent makes you feel. Are you relaxed? Energized? Happy? Choose accordingly and enjoy.

They’re Deep Cleaning

Spring wouldn’t be spring without a deep clean, even for the pros. Wolf offers a helpful mindset to choose as you organize and tackle your at-home cleaning projects. “Outside of the usual decluttering, I am thinking about my home as if I am about to move in—from cleaning windows, vents, lighting, and paint,” she shares.

Try It Yourself: Take time this season to clean the spots that don’t get daily or monthly care. Per Wolf’s suggestion, look at your home with fresh eyes. If you had never walked into this home before, what would you notice? Let that inspire you as you plan your spring home projects.

They’re Updating Decor

As you’re doing your deep clean, you may begin to notice that some items in your home need to be updated. Wolf is on the lookout for quick decor fixes that are simple and won’t break the bank in her own home. “Quick fixes for decor include fresh pillows, throws, bedding, and a kitchen island paint-over. Changing all bulbs to a consistent LED color temperature is also helpful,” she states.

Morrow agrees. ”I like to refresh my accents during the spring season to give my home a new look,” she says. “ Transitioning throw pillow covers from dark and moody shades like emerald green to lighter and softer pastels is one way I like to make changes.”

Try It Yourself: Notice if any of your throws are a little worse for wear, or if your pillows have lost their shape. Investing in updated linens will keep things fresh and cozy, and introduce lighter shades appropriate for warmer weather. Paint touch-ups are also a quick and easy fix that will make a big impact in your home, and on your nervous system, too. No more chipped paint will be easy on your eyes.

They’re Buying Fresh Sheets

Isn’t changing over your bedding between seasons a delightful small joy? Spring bedding is airy and light, and Morse refreshes her bedroom each year with a new pair of sheets. “I like to buy one pair of fresh sheets for my bed as bedding takes a lot of wear and tear,” she shares.

Try It Yourself: While you’re digging through your linen closet, Morse suggests doing a declutter as you go. “Additionally, I like to organize my bedding, get rid of the ones that are no longer in great shape, and buy a completely new set for the next year,” she continues.

They’re Organizing Cabinets

“Two of the areas that I tend to refresh in my home every spring are my kitchen and bathrooms,” Morse shares. “First, I like organizing and cleaning out the pantry and all the cabinets, and then I like to do the same for the bathrooms.”

Try It Yourself: Spring cleaning gets a lot of hype this season, but decluttering and organizing go hand in hand with a deep clean, especially in your kitchen and bathroom like Morse says. Give yourself time this season to take everything out of your pantry or cabinet and toss the items that are old or expired, and organize all of the items you keep. It’s best to do one cabinet at a time, so you don’t get overwhelmed. Good design is not only for what’s in plain sight, but what goes on behind closed doors as well.

They’re Incorporating Florals

If there’s ever a time to sprinkle your home with fresh bouquets, it’s now. Flowers add beauty instantly, whether they are real or faux. “I like to incorporate oversized faux spring florals like cherry blossoms and lilacs,” Morrow says. Morrow herself has a large vase of white cherry blossoms in her home office. Large faux florals add a layer of softness to her space, and since they’re faux, she doesn’t need to worry about watering them.

Try It Yourself: If you’re lucky enough to have flowering branches in your backyard, pruning your trees and bringing those branches inside is a wonderful way to affordably incorporate the real thing. If not, browsing Trader Joe’s flower aisle will be lovely, especially since the grocery store offers a wide array of affordable flowers, branches, and greenery.

The post 7 Simple Ways to Make a Calm and Relaxing Home, According to Experts appeared first on Camille Styles.

Imagine stepping into a kitchen filled with bright, open windows. Sun pours onto clean and tidy countertops and a small bouquet of tulips sits atop the kitchen island. You smell cookies in the oven while a pot of coffee brews, and a nearby breakfast nook is strewn with plush pillows, beckoning you to come and sit. Your shoulders soften. You breathe a little deeper. Just the thought of this cozy kitchen is enough to make you feel more serene, and perhaps yearn for a comfortable spot like this one in your own home. Right?

There is no doubt that our spaces impact our nervous systems. Our environment, especially at home, affects us both mentally and emotionally, whether we are aware of it or not. But are there really ways to leverage the design elements in our homes to create more calm in our lives? I spoke with lifestyle expert and interior designer Joshua Smith and mental health and wellness therapist at Canyon Ranch Lenox Mary Cahilly for answers. Ahead, they share insights on neuroaesthetics, the intersection of wellness and design, and how your home affects your nervous system. Read on for their tips and expertise on creating a relaxed and happy home.

What are neuroaesthetics?

One way to describe the way our homes make us feel is through neuroaesthetics, a relatively new area of neuroscience research. According to the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics, neuroaesthetics are “a subdiscipline of cognitive neuroscience concerned with the neural basis of aesthetic experiences, which involve interactions with entities and events that evoke intense feelings, often of pleasure.” In other words, it’s the study of how design, art, and beauty affect our brains and nervous systems.

“Your home can be your stressor or your sanctuary. It can’t be both.”

– Joshua Smith

Cahilly knows how important our homes are when it comes to our mental and emotional health. “As mammals, our limbic systems are always scanning for safety,” she explains. “Home can become either a safe sanctuary from the noise and demands of a busy life, or it can signal a need for continued busyness and vigilance.” One of the first questions Smith asks when working with his interior design clients isn’t what they want a space to look like, but what they want it to feel like. “Your home can be your stressor or your sanctuary. It can’t be both,” he shares. “A beautiful interior isn’t something we can just see, it’s something we experience. It engages the senses. It activates the soul.”

Tips for Creating a Calm Home

To get a sense of how you experience your home, Smith suggests noticing how you feel when you step inside the front door. “When you walk into your home at the end of the day, there should be a sense of calm,” he says. “That is an indicator that you’ve done something right, since chemicals and neurotransmitters were released that produced that feeling of peace and relief.”

If walking through your front door doesn’t elicit feelings of tranquility, don’t worry. There are a number of ways you can minimize stress in your home, add beauty, and shift items around to create more feelings of calm and relaxation.

Declutter

One place to start in your home is with a good old-fashioned declutter. “Everyone seems to benefit from a little more organization or less visual stimuli,” Smith says. If your house is filled with many items, your instinct may be to get rid of things or create an elaborate organization system, but Smith says to stay realistic. “Let’s not try to eliminate, let’s try to corral,” he states reassuringly. Invest in storage furniture, give your items a home, and organize them into categories. Even placing items on a tray can keep them assembled, whether it’s spices in the kitchen or your keys in the entryway. “I am a tray person. I love a good tray,” Smith jokes.

Minimize the Stressors

As you walk into a room, Smith suggests asking yourself what stresses you out about the space. Cahilly agrees. “I would encourage you to mindfully pause and explore how do I feel in this space? What promotes anxiety?” she offers. Identifying the stressors is the first step toward creating more calm, and it doesn’t need to be complicated.

Smith recalls a client who felt stressed in their home office by visible cords. Luckily, there are very simple solutions to covering cords, so the stressor is easily minimized. “It can be so simple. The things that aggravate you can sometimes be easily fixed,” he encourages.

Part With Items That Trigger Unhappy Memories

“Although I am not a home designer by any stretch of the imagination, I have done enough work with clients over the years to understand that objects and spaces trigger memories, sometimes conscious and often subconscious,” Cahilly says. “Memories of painful experiences are stored so that our nervous system can remind us to be vigilant and thereby avoid a recurrence of that experience. In that case, our nervous system does not allow us to fully rest.”

To combat this, Cahilly suggests emptying your home of objects that don’t bring you joy. “Intentionally fill your home with space and objects which help you to smile and exhale,” she says. Smith agrees. “What are the things that make you feel comfortable, nourished, safe, supported, cozy? It’s about energy, and it’s what the nervous system is reacting to,” he explains.

Take the time to go through your home and notice if you have framed pictures of a turbulent time in your life, or if you’re holding on to decor that reminds you of something unpleasant. Donate or toss these items as soon as you can for a refreshed space.

Create a Meditation Space

Deep breaths, quiet time, and meditation are all tools you can use to regulate your nervous system. Smith suggests creating a designated space in your home for centering. “It will help you feel at ease much quicker. When I have a table with crystals and things that speak to my soul, it automatically makes me feel relaxed,” he shares.

A meditation space can be as simple as a corner of your bedroom or as large as a whole room. “Consider the soothing aspect of nature as you decorate,” Cahilly recommends. “Include plants, photos of natural settings, or stones you’ve collected from interesting places.” She also recommends keeping screens out of this space for the ultimate reset.

Engage the Senses

One of Smith’s signatures when it comes to designing a space is engaging the senses. “Ask yourself, what am I smelling? What am I seeing, tasting, touching? Use the senses to help shift the energy of a room, and even the day,” he encourages.

Smith recommends choosing cozy textures for furniture and textiles, adding a fragrance that you love, and including colors and art that bring you joy. It’s even about what you listen to. “What kind of music will soothe your nervous system? If you’re feeling low, what’s going to pump you up?” he asks. “Engaging the senses can make the mundane more meaningful. Most days are ordinary, but they don’t have to be. If you know what brings you joy, how can you dial it up at least 10%?”

Use Colors Found in Nature

There’s a reason most people feel calm when they watch a sunset, sit by the ocean, or go on a hike. Nature is soothing, and bringing the outside in is a wonderful way to cultivate calm in our homes. An easy way to start is with color.

“I’ve never heard anyone say they hate the color blue or green, two nature-based colors,” Smith shares. He also understands why neutrals are so popular. “So many people feel comfortable and safe with neutrals because they’re earth tones. They emulate the ground, the earth. It makes sense.” Notice what colors you’re drawn to, and know that soft blues, gentle greens, and earthy browns are nature-based palettes that will promote calm.

Embrace Imperfection

Having perfectionist tendencies can be hard on your nervous system, and not having a “perfect” home can sometimes lead to overwhelm and anxiety. Smith says the sooner you embrace imperfection, the better. “I call it livable beauty. It’s not about perfectionism. There’s no way your home is going to be perfect, it’s never going to be finished. The notion that it’s going to get there one day—you’ve got to let it go.”

Take the pressure off and practice gratitude for your space instead. The fact that you have a home, that you’re working on making it more relaxed and beautiful, and focusing on the spaces you do love, no matter how small, is a wonderful place to start.

If there’s one room that tends to slip into disarray, it’s the bathroom. As one of the most frequented rooms in the house outside of the kitchen, a clean and coordinated bathroom can quickly turn into a disorganized one. It’s because of this that many are dying to know: how to organize your bathroom and keep it that way—once and for all.

In our desperation to remedy the chaos, we turned to organizing expert and owner of Rachel and CompanyRachel Rosenthal, for tips on how to organize your bathroom. Let me tell you, she’s serious about containing the chaos. After law school, Rosenthal gave up the security and stability of a 9 to 5 career to build a professional organizing firm instead. All of us here, plus Rosenthal’s clients, can say with certainty: we’re so glad she did. Take a glimpse at Rosenthal’s Instagram, and you’ll see why.

Ahead, we share her tips for how to organize your bathroom, from the bathroom drawers to the bathroom cabinets—and so much more.

Tackle Your Bathroom (Or Any Space) Mentally First

How many times have you said to yourself mid-week I’ll clean out the bathroom this weekend. Then inevitably, come said weekend, you somehow find a million other things to do? The result: nothing gets done. This could go on for weeks, months, years… you get the picture. Want to know why we keep putting it off? Rosenthal says being in the right mindset for organizing is so important before you jump into tackling any space. The bathroom included.

“Getting yourself mentally ready to declutter as well as ready to change your systems is crucial to making any organization project stick,” she tells me. “If you try to conquer a space without the right mindset or motivation, you are less likely to maintain the systems in the long run.”

If you’re struggling with the mental side of organization, Rosenthal reminds me that you don’t have to organize room by room. “You don’t have to declutter and organize your whole bathroom in one sitting,” she adds. “You can start small with just a drawer or the space under your sink. Organizing one small space well will have a much greater impact than organizing a larger space without the right headspace behind it.”

Modern bathroom organization.

First Things First: Declutter, Declutter, Declutter

Before you do any organizing, Rosenthal urges all of us to declutter first—”it’s the most crucial step.” You need to start by taking everything out of the space you are organizing and then follow her steps for decluttering below.

1. Take everything out of the space and lay it out in one spot.

2. Do a quick initial sweep of the items to pull out any trash. Think empty toiletries, such as containers of floss or stray cotton balls.

3. Review products for expiration dates. Even in the bathroom, products have expiration dates (especially those miscellaneous medications). Rosenthal uses this guide for makeup products, but be sure to check the dates on your specific items.

4. Create categories of products and items. This will be slightly different for each person and their routines in the bathroom. Make categories that make sense for you, like hair care, skincare products, medicines, etc.

5. Review categories for duplicates and declutter where possible. Do you really need 12 mascaras? Are you ever going to use that clarifying shampoo that you can’t stand the smell of? Having like with like will allow you to see what you have more easily to be able to part with the items you don’t need.

6. Take note of the items you need to restock. The organizing and decluttering process is mostly focused on parting with items, but this can also be a great way to set you up for success down the line by evaluating what essentials you might be running low on and need to pick up at the store.

Create Product Categories to Streamline Your Bathroom Routine

This might be a new concept for many reading this, but if you want to streamline your morning and evening bathroom routine, think of your bathroom products in terms of categories. Be sure to keep your bathroom routines in mind when creating them to streamline your mornings or evenings in the bathroom, aka not spending a lot of time searching for the right products.

“This might mean you are categorizing morning routine together and nightly routine together versus placing all cleansers in one spot,” says Rosenthal. “Your bathroom routine is personal and your organization of the space should be no different.” Hear, hear.

Invest in Bathroom Storage

Once you have those categories in place, Rosenthal says it’s important to keep them together and organized. Below, she outlines some of her favorite products for organizing bathroom categories.

To organize a drawer:

These deep bins are perfect drawer organizers and create multiple categories within one drawer. Whether your bathroom vanity drawers are deep or shallow, these offer ample sectioning for all of your necessities.

To organize a cabinet:

These multi-purpose bins work great in a cabinet or under the sink space to create definition between different categories.

To organize a shelf:

These pantry bins are wonderful on a shelf. I use these for everything from organizing sunscreen to keeping extra makeup that is not in my daily routine.

When you need storage out on the bathroom counter:

Not all of us are blessed with lots of hidden storage spaces in our bathrooms. These clear stackable drawers and space-saver hair and makeup station are great for creating a system on your counter that looks good enough to stay out all the time.

Organizing Tips for Small Bathrooms

If you live in a small apartment like me, then you’ll know the struggle. But fear not, Rosenthal has a solution for how to organize your bathroom when space is lacking. She recommends turntables (like this lazy Susan or this two-tier pick) as fantastic options for small bathrooms. “Turntables allow you to maximize space efficiently by allowing you to easily access items that would otherwise be hidden in a corner or only accessible by moving a number of other products,” she says. These spaces are great for storing bigger items, such as extra toilet paper and hand towels.

If you don’t have any counter space and limited square footage, Rosenthal says to go up. “Utilizing height is a great way to maximize storage in any bathroom,” she recommends. “This might mean using a multilevel drawer system under your sink or getting stackable bins on taller shelves to store items you don’t use as often.

Separate Your Backstock From Your Day-To-Day Items

If there is one organizational hack Rosenthal wants to stress, it’s to separate your backstock from everyday items to allow your bathroom to function better on a daily basis. “No one wants to run out of toothpaste or be scrambling when you have just a tiny sliver of soap left, but all of those extras can create clutter in your bathroom,” she stresses.

“Backstock can be stored somewhere out the way (a laundry room, linen closet, or even under your bed if you live in a small space). Use bins to keep your backstock contained and organized.”

5 Tips to Keep Your Bathroom Organized

1. Start Labeling

Labeling is key to maintaining an organized space. Having labels on bins, drawers, and cabinets will make it so much easier for you to put items away in the correct spot and continue the systems you put in place.

2. Schedule Monthly Refreshes

Organizing is not a one-time event. Having an organized space requires maintenance and refreshes every so often. You don’t have to do a full deep declutter and organization each month but setting aside a little time to do a quick once-over of the space to put everything away and tidy up will keep your bathroom from getting out of control.

3. Give Everything a Home

If you start with everything in your bathroom having a home, you will be much more likely to keep the space clean and organized over time. This means deciding where each category you created during decluttering goes in the space and perhaps investing in some bins or baskets to house those categories.

4. Be Mindful of What You Bring Into the Space

It can be easy to fall back into a disorganized mess if you are not careful with what you bring into your space. You don’t have to be as ruthless as one in one out, but as you purchase new products, make sure you are thinking through if this can replace something you already have. (And if so, toss that duplicate item.) If not, is there a spot that it will fit within the organization system?

5. Don’t Forget About Laundry

Yesterday’s clothes or today’s dirty towel can be the culprit of a cluttered bathroom. Give yourself room to pop laundry in the bathroom to keep the space looking neat and tidy.

Everything You Need for an Organized Bathroom

While we’re mindful to stress following these strategies before purchasing organizational tools, some heavy-hitting products can make streamlining your bathroom so much easier. Browse our favorites below—they’re our go-to’s for keeping the clutter contained.

Our home should be a calming oasis. It’s somewhere that brings us both happiness and a sense of peace. (Particularly in this often hectic world.) To me, there’s no better feeling than coming home at the end of a long day to somewhere that relaxes me. Turning my house into a personal sanctuary is my ultimate goal—and thankfully, one of my favorite designers shared his top meditation room ideas to help all of us craft the perfect haven.

I’ve rearranged and redecorated to surround myself with objects I love, colors that make me feel calm and focused, and family photos and trinkets that bring back happy memories with friends and family. I know I’m not alone when I say that these past few months (well, years… ) have sent my anxiety spiraling. One thing that’s helped me cope? Starting a daily meditation practice.

The Importance of a Meditation Practice

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t always sold on meditation. Even considering all of its benefits, it was a struggle to quiet my mind. I’d tried it in yoga and even have several apps for it. But it wasn’t until I read this quote by Headspace co-founder, Andy Puddicomb that I decided to commit. And 30 days later, I’ve already felt my anxiety, mood, and stress levels transform. (For the better, of course.)

“The mind,” Puddicomb said, “if we leave it alone, if we don’t take any time to look after it, it will start to break down and we won’t experience life in the happiest way possible. We often think that happiness is somewhere in the future […] We’re always looking to the future and someplace else in the hope that we’ll find it. You’re going to have to give up looking for happiness outside of yourself. The only thing to do is to get comfortable with the mind as it is. Whether it’s a busy mind or a quiet mind. Thoughts you like, thoughts you don’t like. Pleasant feelings, unpleasant feelings—you just have to get comfortable with it.”

Lightbulb! This is when it all changed for me. I needed to stop trying to answer all of the unknowns and just sit with my uncomfortable feelings. I needed to be present—to embrace patience and stillness. I needed a meditation practice.

Meditation Room Ideas to Help You Craft a Calming Space

Enter my personal meditation space. With it, I have somewhere I can commit to silence, stillness, and getting comfortable with my uncomfortable, anxious thoughts.

To design the perfect meditation space, I turned to one of my favorite interior designers, Jeremiah Brent. If you follow his work, you’ll know that he’s a big proponent of meditation and creating morning rituals that set the tone of the home. “Mindfulness has always been a part of my adult life but has looked different in different seasons,” he tells me. “There’s something about reflection and breath that resets us and helps us show up as the best version of ourselves.” We couldn’t agree more.

Meditation is key to setting his day up for success. Brent adds: “There are so many roles that I play and people I interact with in my everyday life. Whether it’s my design team, husband, children, or clients—I can best show up for them after I’ve sat and reconnected with myself. It all ties together and meditation is the way that I have best found to do that.”

So, how do we carve out that time and space? We asked Brent to share his best meditation room ideas. Let’s get into it.

An interior designer based in New York City, Jeremiah Brent, founder of Jeremiah Brent Design (JBD) and lifestyle brand Atrio, has a rare understanding of the ineffable qualities that keep us truly connected to the spaces we inhabit. His fine-honed intuition and sophisticated sensibilities have led to the transformation of countless homes and commercial properties across the world—a feat that landed him on Architectural Digest’s AD100.

1. Create a Mindful Corner

It’s important to create a special corner or even a room at home to practice daily meditation. It should be somewhere that provides you with the opportunity to recharge both physically and mentally.

“You want your home to represent the pillars of life that mean the most to you,” says Brent. “By
setting an environment for the ceremony, there’s an invitation to experience continuous inner grounding for yourself and for all those who enter into your space.”

To be clear: you do not need an entire room for it. An empty corner, a space in your closet, bathroom, living room, or even a spot in your backyard or garden will work just fine. Set aside a special place that is completely devoted to being still and working out your mind. It’s less about space and more about picking out and prioritizing an area where you can focus on yourself—even if it’s just five minutes a day.

2. Make It Comfortable

When creating your personal meditation space, Brent tells me there are three essential elements to consider first: texture, scent, and lighting. “Touching on these three senses can make even the smallest of spaces feel serene,” he says. The space should also be comfortable and calming, yet in sync with the rest of your home.

“There’s an art to creating a calming ambiance throughout your living area as a whole so your meditation space doesn’t feel exclusive,” Brent adds. “I have different vignettes throughout our home where I keep my meditation staples ready for quiet moments.”

Consider loading up on rugs, throws, meditation cushions, or floor pillows to transform your corner into a cozy meditation oasis. We love layering sheepskins on top of rugs and using large pillows to deck out the space. Or, if you have the budget, consider investing in a few meditation cushions. They are designed to help alleviate pressure on certain parts of the body.

We also love using sound baths, and there are plenty of sound bath playlists online you can explore. Himalayan salt lamps and candles are another easy way to set a comfy, serene vibe in your space. Infusing these elements will go a long way in creating feelings of zen and help to improve your practice.

3. Pick Somewhere With Natural Light

Natural light is huge in helping me feel awake, grounded, and focused—you see it everywhere in Brent’s home, too. Choose an area in your home for your personal meditation space that has a window or skylight and allows natural light to flow into your space. If you are living in a small apartment or have minimal windows, consider rethinking certain rooms or areas in your home to accommodate. Can you sacrifice some space in your WFH area, dining area, or living room to devote to your meditation space?

Get creative in choosing the perfect corner. Remember, this is a space that you will (hopefully) be using every day, and rethinking areas that may not be getting used as much as you had originally thought may be the best option for creating your perfect meditation space at home.

4. Keep It Clean and Uncluttered

When it comes to a meditation space, oftentimes less is more. You want this space to feel light, bright, and clean. And, having clutter around you will most likely have you feeling more cluttered in your mind. Choose a distraction-free area without a TV or computer in sight. Remember, the whole point of meditation is to be able to better handle the stress in your life, so don’t add to it by trying to perfect over-the-top meditation space. You want a minimal, no-frills, quiet, and relaxing space that instantly makes you feel calm when you step into it.

5. Incorporate Natural Elements

Nature is organically relaxing and healing, so it’s important to bring some natural elements into your mediation space. While it’s ideal to meditate on the sand by the beach or another calming, outdoor environment, it’s not always possible if you live in a busy urban environment like myself. But, adding natural touches of plants, stones, and/or greenery to your meditation space will instantly infuse it with harmony and balance.

You can choose any natural elements you like or any type of nature that brings you joy. This can be a potted plant, a vase of cut flowers, decorative branches, a small succulent garden, jars filled with sand or seashells, or even a small electric water fountain that trickles in the corner if you have space. If you’re trying to keep things compact, built-in shelving is an ideal way to display lots of little green things without encroaching on valuable real estate in your space.

6. Add a Personal Touch

When creating your mediation space, you want to include some of your own personal touches. Brent is big on infusing sentimentality. In fact, every inch of their home is layered in meaning. This can be anything from a smell, sound, or object that particularly soothes your body and relaxes your mind. Think of incorporating things like a diffuser with essential oils, candles, bells, chimes, crystals, a statue of Buddha, mala beads, words of affirmation, or artwork. Adding any of these to your space are great ways to create a serene and peaceful environment that feels unique to you.

But you do not want to overcrowd the space. It is important to design a clean and clear environment to keep your mind open. Choose only a few pieces at a time, and swap them out for different ones now and again if you cannot decide. This is a personal experience and is meant to inspire you to connect with yourself, so have some fun with it!

“When curating your meditation space, all that you need is to surround yourself with whatever is in your home that you connect to in a calming way.
