Ever since we got these pro landscaping tips on how to design a gorgeous outdoor space, I’ve been thinking about planting a garden. The bad news is that I live on the third floor of a loft space so I’m stuck in daydream mode. For now, my plans are relegated to constantly looking up Pinterest garden ideas. Of course, inspiration abounds.

Luckily for me, I have several friends with big backyard spaces—and I’m hoping they’ll let me live vicariously through their landscaping endeavors. Maybe even help out with some planting? We’ll see. To get my creative juices flowing, I spent a few hours scrolling and looking up Pinterest garden ideas. Needless to say, my inspiration files are full. I now have pages and pages of garden décor and design saturating my screen—and I’m not mad about it. And while it was hard to choose, these 13 gardens came out on top.

Nancy Meyers’ Interiors Are Iconic—A Designer Shares How to Get the Look https://camillestyles.com/design/nancy-meyers-interiors/ https://camillestyles.com/design/nancy-meyers-interiors/#respond Sun, 28 Jul 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=275766 Diane Keaton-approved.

The post Nancy Meyers’ Interiors Are Iconic—A Designer Shares How to Get the Look appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Filmmaker and design icon Nancy Meyers famously told ELLE Decor in 2012 that she treats the homes in her movies like they’re main characters. Her interiors are an extension of her leading ladies in her films, and it’s clear that she puts an incredible amount of work into these homes which in reality, are just very well-dressed sound stages. It’s this thought and intention that makes them all the more impressive.

Bright, open kitchen

How to Bring the Nancy Meyers Aesthetic Home

It makes complete sense that “Nancy Meyers aesthetic” is trending. Who wouldn’t want to capture some of the joy and ease that her films evoke? I chatted with designer Joshua Smith and we did a deep dive into what we think people are really after when they say they want a Nancy Meyers interior—and how to achieve the look yourself.

Joshua Smith
Joshua Smith

After attending the New York School of Interior Design, Joshua Smith began his career under the guidance of Steven Gambrel. Going on to launch his own design firm in 2013, he was named a “rising star” and “one to watch” by House Beautiful magazine just over a year later. Over the years, Joshua has built an impressive portfolio ranging from modern sanctuaries to country estates.

There’s no arguing that Nancy Meyers interiors are universally loved. They’re cozy, warm, and we all want to jump through the screen to be in them ourselves, even though her film sets are completely different design styles. “All her interiors speak different languages, yet they all conjure the same feeling of I want to fall into that,” Smith says. It’s a retreat. There’s something about them that feels good. It doesn’t matter if the home is coastal, country, California, cottage, or traditional—what we get is Nancy Meyers cool. We all want a little bit of that in our lives—a feeling of je ne sais quoi she brings to all of her spaces.”

When we move beyond aesthetics, or what a home looks like, the appeal of Meyers’ interiors is very clear. Smith sees it when he’s working with design clients as well. “People don’t buy houses based on what they look like, but what they feel like,” he shares.

Ashley Robertson living room

How do you get the Nancy Meyers aesthetic?

The Nancy Meyers aesthetic is more than a look—it’s a feeling. “I call it livable beauty,” Smith remarks. “You can have a space with a sofa, a coffee table, some chairs, and a rug that will be put together and styled, but it’s the layers that will make it feel like home. I think that’s what Nancy does so well.”

So what do layers in a home look like? “It’s the blankets in baskets, or the stack of books by the chair,” Smith says. “We think it’s the big stuff like the sofa that’s going to make a house a home, but it’s actually the sentimental item on the centerpiece of the coffee table that makes it interesting.”

Nancy Meyers interiors are beautiful, but she prioritizes emotional connection. The homes in her films are lived in, comfortable, and they reflect the personality of its occupants. So when it comes to recreating looks for yourself in your own home, imagine who you would be in a Nancy Meyers film. Truly! Who are you? How can your home be an extension of your wants and needs, as well as your personality and style? What’s important to you? And of course, when you step into your home, what do you want to feel?

If this sounds overwhelming or perhaps you just need a little guidance, I’ve rounded up a few favorite Nancy Meyers interiors, the feelings they evoke, and a little more about their particular design style. Check it out below!

The Hamptons Beach House In Something’s Gotta Give

If you want to feel: Energized, light, and ready to fall in love in a house by the sea (whether you actually are or not).

Then recreate: Diane Keaton’s beach home in Something’s Gotta Give

The vibe: Coastal Grandma, quintessential beach house charm

Diane Keaton’s character, Erica Barry, is the blueprint for Coastal Grandma aesthetic. She lives in a sprawling, beautiful beach house in the Hamptons. It’s drenched in blue and white, has rows and rows of books and features plush, overstuffed couches. It’s the perfect setting for a summer romance on the coast.

“It evokes the feeling of bright light, and we all crave that,” Smith says. There is a freshness that permeates the large, open living space of this iconic beach house and Smith says to be mindful of where in your own home you decide to recreate the look. “I always say there’s going to be one moody space in a home where you go and cocoon, and you’re not going to cocoon in the Something’s Gotta Give living room because it’s so bright!” Smith exclaims. “It’s so fresh, it’s light, and you’re going to feel great, vibrant, and energized in a space like that.”

Opt for a coastal living room or an office space that will no doubt keep you inspired. Erica Barry was a playwright after all, and her sprawling desk faced an enormous window, drenching her in sunlight.

The Cottage in The Holiday

If you want to feel: Curled up in cozy knits, sipping hot cocoa in the English countryside.

Then recreate: Kate Winslet’s cottage in The Holiday

The vibe: Cottagecore

If the Something’s Gotta Give beach house is bright and energizing, the Rosehill Cottage in The Holiday is on the other side of the design spectrum. “You want to cozy up and read a book in that house,” Smith says. “I want a mug of something, sleeves so long they cover my hands—it’s that kind of energy. It’s like a warm hug”

Recreating the Rosehill Cottage can be tricky, since so much of the charm of the home lies in the architecture that won’t be found in a newer home. The stone walls and wood beams add a ton of character to this cozy cottage, but that doesn’t mean you can’t evoke similar feelings yourself. Thrift chintzy, overstuffed armchairs and don’t be afraid to mismatch patterns. Use a tufted ottoman instead of a coffee table and go for a shabby chic look in your living room or bedroom. Estate sales are full of vintage pieces that would look adorable in a Rosehill Cottage-inspired room. If you find pieces that make you want to curl up with a good book, take that as a good sign!

Shop The Cottage Aesthetic

The California Mansion in The Holiday

If you want to feel: Cool, chic and put together.

Then recreate: Cameron Diaz’s home in The Holiday

The vibe: Contemporary California cool

Juxtaposing the cozy cottage in The Holiday was Cameron Diaz’s California mansion. When describing this home, Smith kept coming back to two words. “So cool, so modern,” he states. While not everyone can live in a mansion, there are ways to evoke similar feelings in your own home. “It’s very tailored. There’s a lot of white, no patterns in this home,” Smith observes. “It’s understated luxury.”

If you want to bring a California cool vibe into your own home, opt for white slip-covered furniture, simple seagrass rugs, and black accents. There are lots of plants and large open windows in this home, so adorn your own with plenty of greenery to add some vibrancy. Have lots of table lamps to give the space some warmth with lighting. Invite your neighbors over and share a meal, just like Iris did in the film.

The Father of the Bride House

If you want to feel: The joy and coziness of family living.

Then recreate: The Father of the Bride House

The vibe: Classic, traditional style

Father of the Bride fully romanticized suburban, family living to a T. Within the first few minutes of the film, you’re introduced to family man George Banks, who delivers a monologue about the love he has for his daughter, his family, and his house. There is such beautiful simplicity in the way he describes teaching his kids how to ride their bikes in the driveway and sleeping in tents in the backyard just for fun. If you want to engulf yourself in warm fuzzies, recreating the Father of the Bride house is a great place to start. “This house was the American dream. A picture perfect home,” Smith shares. “It’s layered with books in the bookcases, pictures in picture frames, and the key was that it wasn’t perfect. It screamed, it’s beautiful, we have kids, and we live here!”

The actual home is a classic Colonial, but creating the same vibe means to not take it too seriously. “With this home, and all Nancy Meyers interiors, you don’t feel like you’re going to mess it up. There’s something about it where you’re not afraid to set a drink down or put your feet up. It’s comfortable. It’s lived in,” Smith continues. To create a homey, cozy vibe in your own home, arrange living room furniture for conversation instead of TV watching, adorn your surfaces with framed family photos, add French doors, and make your backyard a place for dining and family activities.

The Kitchen in It’s Complicated

If you want to feel: Cozy in the kitchen, surrounded by loved ones and home-cooked meals.

Then recreate: Meryl Streep’s home in It’s Complicated

The vibe: California Spanish-Style Ranch with a gorgeous kitchen

The home in It’s Complicated does the same thing all Nancy Meyers’ interiors do without a hitch—it’s warm, inviting, and comfortable. What sets this home apart is the kitchen. Jane (played by Meryl Streep) owns a bakery, so of course the kitchen is the heart of her home. It’s where Streep sips wine with her girlfriends, it’s where her adult children gather as they raid her fridge, and it’s a spot for family meals. The kitchen is sophisticated without being overly fancy, and if you want to create the same vibe in your own home, there are a few things Smith suggests.

“Try a mix of open shelving and closed cabinets. Hang your pots on a rack. Create a space where you can actually sit down and have a meal. Life happens in the kitchen!” he says. These kitchen layers will add charm to your space, and may even make cooking easier with everything in reach. But most importantly, imagine your family or friends all gathering in your kitchen and ask yourself if everyone could be comfortable and happy in the space. Making this gathering place as special as it can be with cozy seating, food and drink is the goal.

If I had to pick one single, solitary rule for my home, it would be to banish overhead lighting. It’s harsh, reminiscent of a doctor’s office, and lacks any sort of warmth or coziness. Not to mention this light can make you look like a spooky ghost, thanks to the shadows it casts over your head. In other words, not cute.

15 Home Lighting Ideas to Brighten Your Space

Interior lighting trends in 2024 aim for a soft glow, no matter what room you decide to be in. Layered lighting, or using different light sources in one space, is in. Switching up decor and furniture is, of course, one way to refresh your space, but lighting can completely transform the vibe and not be overlooked. If you’re curious about infusing your space with a new, cozy ambience—check out these home lighting ideas, room by room.

Kitchen

Camille Styles kitchen with pendant lighting.

Pendant lighting

Pendant lighting is not a new home lighting idea—you almost always see them over a kitchen island. But this year, opting for a pendant light with personality is definitely the way to go. In 2024, sculptural statement pieces, oversized pendants, woven materials (hello rattan!) and retro style lighting fixtures are all trending. Not sure what style to embrace? The beauty of pendants is that they’re easy to install and uninstall, so they can change just as simply as your style evolves.

Small table lamps

Placing a small lamp on your kitchen counter is not only adorable, but the light is great too. A mini lamp can be plugged in, or you could opt for a battery operated lamp as well. I have one from Target tucked into a corner of my kitchen, equipped with a Smart bulb that automatically turns on at sunrise every morning. The soft glow from the lamp is so much nicer than the bright, overhead light my kitchen came equipped with—especially early in the morning. There’s nothing like the cozy glow of a mini lamp when I’m making my morning coffee, or whipping up some pre-workout before I head to the gym.

Another plus? Mini lamps don’t have to be expensive. Just be sure to place them in a spot where they won’t be splattered with food while cooking or preparing!

Toe kick lighting

Toe kick lights are ideal for late night snackers or very early risers. These lights can be installed at the bottom of your kitchen cabinets, illuminating the floor so you can see where you’re going without turning on a larger, harsher light. Filling your water before going back to bed just got a lot more pleasant! You can install this yourself with a strip of LED lights with an adhesive backing.

Backyard

Camille Styles' backyard

Cordless table lamps

I’ve been seeing mini cordless table lamps all over my social media, and they’re always part of outdoor tablescapes. These mini lamps are battery operated and adorable, and most have brightness settings that can be switched just by tapping the base of the lamp. They emit a soft and subtle glow and create a cozy ambience, just like a restaurant would. Think of it like a candle at the center of your table, it’s just a mini lamp instead!

String lights

There’s nothing more charming than strings of lights overhead as you lounge outdoors. Transform your outdoor space with LED string lights. Be generous and include as many as you like—let it be your only source of outdoor lighting. Solar-powered LED string lights are also a great home lighting idea, especially if you live somewhere with reliable sun. They don’t need to be plugged in and you don’t even need to turn them off and on. I have a string or two on my balcony and they create a magical vibe, even just by admiring them indoors.

Pathway lights

Not only are pathway lights beautiful, but they are also great for safety reasons. Dot your backyard paths with lights so you and your guests can see where they’re going. You could even get Smart pathway lights with motion sensors for both safety and energy efficiency. More and more, we’re seeing homeowners put just as much effort into their outdoor spaces as their indoor ones, and pathway lights can guide you into your own little backyard oasis.

Bathroom

Molly Madifs bathroom

Backlit mirrors

There are many home lighting ideas for the bathroom, but one that’s making waves this year are illuminated bathroom mirrors. Backlit mirrors cast light evenly throughout your entire face, making make-up application easy, not to mention a very accurate reflection of yourself. These mirrors come equipped with lights that surround the perimeter, and they give the entire bathroom a polished and unique look.

Statement chandeliers

If you think chandeliers are reserved only for entryways and dining rooms—think again. These statement lighting fixtures are now making their way into bathrooms. Is there anything more chic than a chandelier over a soaking tub? Be sure to install them with warm white bulbs and even better if they can be on a dimmer as well!

Living room inspired lighting

Ever since the pandemic, bathrooms are becoming cozier and cozier. Creating a spa-like environment is top of mind for many. Now we’re seeing bathrooms become even more welcoming with lighting you traditionally see in a living room. Think table lamps on counters and vanities, and pretty pendants and sconces. Don’t be afraid to lean into your creativity and layer lighting so the bathroom becomes a place you want to spend time in. It’s so much easier to romanticize your morning routine when you’re surrounded with soft light!

Living Room

Camille Styles living room.

Sculptural floor lamps

Living room home lighting ideas include a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting throughout your space. Floor lamps are wonderful for living rooms, and they make a statement whether they’re on or off. Going for a sculptural floor lamp will create a statement, while also providing cozy light, making your living room all the more inviting.

Table lamps

Instead of relying on one large overhead light, a small collection of table lamps will create a warm and inviting environment. Place them on side tables or nearby cabinets and definitely include one in a reading nook or cozy corner. The gentle, soothing light is ideal for relaxing, lounging, and chatting with friends—perfect for a living room.

Gallery lighting fixtures can go above your framed art, offering a subtle glow to your beloved pieces. Using light to highlight certain design aspects of your home can help draw attention to specific spaces. In addition to art, picture lights are great on top of bookshelves or in place of where you’d put a sconce.

Bedroom

Sconces

Home lighting ideas for the bedroom are all about creating a calm environment. Layered light is key, and scones over nightstands create a cozy, ambient light that’s perfect for bedtime. Sconces mount on the wall and are ideal if you’d like a little more space on the surface of your nightstand. Choose a sconce over a bedside table lamp to maximize space and embrace your own personal style too.

Salt lamps

Himalayan salt lamps emit a warm, subtle glow that is perfect for bedtime. Soft, warm light can help you relax and unwind from the day—all while promoting a good night’s rest. They look gorgeous resting on a dresser or a nightstand, or if you prefer, they even have salt lamp nightlights and bulbs.

Headboard lighting

Ambient light at the back of your headboard? Yes, please! Last year, Sleep Number rolled out beds that included lighting features built in, like reading lights and headboard lights. You can adjust how bright the headboard lights are so you can unwind and even wake up with ease. The lights are at the back end of the headboard, so light emits on the wall behind, creating a cozy effect. If you’re not in the market for a new headboard, installing LED strip lights can also give you a similar effect!

When it comes to design styles, I don’t like to be boxed into just one. Perhaps it’s my Gemini sun, but I like it when I can embrace all the interior styles I love. My living room leans coastal, my office is ultra feminine, and I’m currently planning the cottagecore bedroom of my dreams.

8 Dreamy Bedroom Styles to Transform Your Space

For the longest time, I put my bedroom design plans to the side, since it’s a space that guests don’t really spend time in. But I can see now that creating a calm, serene bedroom is intimate and lovely—and I wish I hadn’t put it off. It’s been fun exploring different bedroom styles to see what fits. If you want to discover your own bedroom style, or you want to give your bedroom a whole new aesthetic, read on for all the inspo.

Cottagecore

If you find yourself daydreaming about running away to the countryside, the cottagecore aesthetic will be right up your alley. A cottagecore bedroom is cozy, simple, and inviting—think vintage furniture, lots of florals, wood, stone, and anything that reminds you of sunny, bucolic bliss. Keeping your color palette soft with pastels and warm neutrals will help set the tone for a calm and relaxing space. Nature-inspired accents like potted plants and flowers are also a must!

Coastal

Who doesn’t want to live close to the water? Luckily you can bring the beach vibes to you, no matter where you live. A coastal-inspired bedroom includes crisp whites, soft blues and greens, woven furniture, and nautical accents. This bedroom style evokes a calm and serene beach-like ambience all year long. Bonus points if you have large, open windows and tons of sunshine. Gauzy curtains can add to the relaxed vibe of your space, especially if there’s a light breeze outside. All you need are ocean sounds and you’ll be transported to the seaside for the sweetest of dreams.

Farmhouse

Farmhouse interiors continue to be wildly popular. It’s hard not to fall for its rustic charm! Opt for wood furniture, black chandeliers, and a neutral color palette if you love this bedroom style. Farmhouse blends both old and new together seamlessly. Incorporating vintage and handcrafted items like quilts or other textiles is a fantastic way to personalize your bedroom and make it extra cozy, all while leaning into the farmhouse aesthetic.

Minimalist

Neutrals reign supreme in a minimalist bedroom. Even if the rest of your home is filled with color and pattern, a minimalist bedroom might be exactly what you need when it comes to a good night’s rest. This bedroom style is easy on your nervous system—whites, creams, and taupes keep everything simple and relaxed. To keep a minimalist bedroom balanced, be sure you’re finding a variety of textures and contrast in your textiles. Embrace different hues of the simple, yet beautiful, neutral color palette as well.

Pro tip: To really embody the minimalist style, keep your phone out of the bedroom. A distraction-free bedroom will make falling asleep that much easier, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t kick your phone out sooner.

Maximalist

Maximalism has been trending all year. This bedroom style is all about bold, eclectic decor, colors, and patterns. It’s highly individualized, and really about decorating with whatever brings you the most joy. Look for unique art, elaborate bedding, and interesting decor pieces to make your bedroom your own, personalized retreat. One specific maximalist trend I’ve been loving is pattern drenching, or adorning your room with a single pattern, top to bottom. This trend embraces a matchy-matchy vibe—why not have your wallpaper, drapes and bedding all go together? It’s a fun way to feel cocooned in your own personal style.

Whimsical

If you love bright color palettes, decor that makes you smile, and pieces that are just plain fun—your aesthetic is whimsical. There’s a sense of playfulness to these spaces, making this a perfect bedroom style if you want your room to feel magical and inspiring. Don’t hesitate to buy quirky furniture (the strawberry side table I keep seeing on TikTok comes to mind!), hang fairy lights from the ceiling, or splurge on the canopy bed that makes you feel like a queen.

Moody

Rich color palettes, atmospheric lighting, and a taste for sophistication are what moody bedrooms are made from. Deeper hues like black, navy, and burgundy are go-to’s for this bedroom style. While some might prefer a lighter, brighter color palette, others crave the cozy, intimate atmosphere a darker room creates. Painting the walls will instantly switch up the vibe in your moody bedroom. Opt for a large piece of art with colors that match your nightstands or pillows to create a balanced space.

Japandi

There’s a lot of beauty in simplicity, and this bedroom style oozes peace and tranquility.

Japandi is a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design aesthetics. Imagine if hygge (the Scandinavian practice of embracing all things cozy) and wabi-sabi (the ancient Japanese philosophy of contented slow living) joined forces to create the ultimate relaxed environment and you have Japandi. Known for its clean lines, natural textures and neutral color palette, it’s a perfect bedroom style to try if you’re looking for some zen.

Choose white and cream linens, keep a sprig of something green like eucalyptus on your nightstand, and keep your space a clutter-free zone. This will result in a peaceful and inviting bedroom that will make you want to curl up and catch up on some zzz’s.

One of the simplest joys in my life right now is walking through my neighborhood and admiring my neighbors’ hydrangea bushes. Not every house has them, but the ones that do exude effortless beauty. They’re a burst of pink or blue blooms that I’m savoring, since I know hydrangea season doesn’t last forever. They remind me that color makes an incredible impact, especially when it’s part of a garden in front of your home. The lush pink blooms are friendly and inviting. They emit an air of playfulness, while the deep blue hydrangea bushes seem more peaceful and grounded in their beauty. Garden color schemes clearly set the mood for your outdoor living spaces, and it’s a step you don’t want to skip when planning your garden.

If you’d like to plant a garden but aren’t sure where to begin, I chatted with mother-daughter duo Brooke and Leila Giannetti, garden designers at Patina Meadow, as well as Madeline Hooper, host of the PBS TV show Garden Fit, to get their pro tips on all things garden color schemes. Ahead, learn how to design your garden with color in mind, as well as the best color schemes to try yourself!

Hydrangea bushes garden color scheme.

Where to Begin When Planning Your Garden

Before you head to the nursery, both Giannetti’s suggest taking time to think about the mood you want to set, as well as the intention you have for your outdoor space and garden. “Are you looking to grow food for your family? Are you trying to create a space mostly for visual interest? Either way, there are a few design tips to keep in mind,” the duo suggests.

Just like you would an interior space, they encourage using hedges and trees to enclose spaces, like an outdoor room. “This creates a sense of intimacy and privacy, almost like different rooms in a house.” As far as picking which plants and flowers are right for your garden, Hooper says to lead with your heart and to not think too hard about what’s right or wrong. “Surround yourself with colors you love,” she says. “Allow yourself to react to what surprises you and delights you about a garden.”

Hooper also suggests noticing what plants and flowers are working for your neighbors—that means the conditions you both share work well! And finally, if you’re feeling nervous as a beginner gardener, Hooper encourages taking some pressure off and to have fun. “It truly doesn’t matter how you start. You make mistakes. Plants die. You learn by trial and error!” she exclaims.

Why a Color Palette Is Important

“A garden color scheme provides unity and coherence in garden design. It ensures that all elements work together harmoniously, creating a space that is not only visually appealing, but also emotionally resonant,” the Giannetti’s share. “A cohesive color palette helps avoid visual clutter and creates a sense of calm and order, which is particularly important in a garden meant for relaxation and enjoyment.”

If you’re not sure what colors look best together, or just feel afraid to commit, Hooper suggests pots to start. “You don’t have to make the commitment to dig them into the ground necessarily,” she remarks. Knowing what colors and flowers you’re drawn to—as well as the ambience you’d like your outdoor space to have—will set the tone for creating the garden of your dreams.

“Ultimately, your garden should reflect your tastes and preferences. Choose colors that make you happy and create a space where you love to spend time!” the Giannetti’s add.

Four Garden Color Schemes We Love

You can’t go wrong with the following garden color schemes, recommended by Hooper and the Giannetti’s. Ranging from sweet and soft to dramatic and bold, choose the garden color scheme that speaks to your heart—as well as the outdoor space you’re longing to create.

Soft Pastels

If you envision a garden fit for afternoon reading, morning meditation sessions, or casual dinner parties, a pastel color palette would be the dream. “We absolutely adore soft pastel palettes—light lavenders, pale pinks, and soft whites. This combination evokes feelings of calm, serenity, and soothing tranquility,” the Gianetti’s share. Hooper is also a fan of this color palette. “In my garden around the pool, I like to stick to cool pastel colors that go with the water color and gray stone coping,” she explains.

Hooper loves various shades of pinks, blues and yellows and shares that Achillea moonshine, Astilbe ‘Peach Blossom’ and Geranium Roxanne look better and better in her garden each year. Both Giannetti’s love mixing purple with pink or white. “For a soft pastel palette, we would use plants like lavender and thyme, which not only add beautiful pastel hues but also a wonderful scent,” they share. “Pair these with pink and white roses or hydrangeas. The key is to maintain a limited palette and focus on texture for added interest.”

Deep, Rich Hues

If you have an eye for the dramatic and want your home to pop, darker colors may be more your speed. The Giannetti’s recommend pairing deep, rich florals with lush greenery. “Dark tulips in spring, and rich purple hydrangeas in summer are excellent choices,” they advise. “Complement these with foliage plants like boxwoods and yews to add some structure, while complementing the color scheme. You could even add blackberry vines to add a functional touch of rich beauty!”

Blackberry vines will, of course, produce fruit and the berries will turn from a deep red to black as they ripen, naturally providing a beautifully rich color palette. Another option? Orange and yellow blossoms provide stark contrast to deep purple blooms, making purple and orange an unexpected, yet beautiful color scheme to try. Mix gold and orange avens (Geum spp.) or yellow Hollyhock Alcea ’Spotlight Sunshine’ with purple or crimson scabiosa (or pincushion flower) for a stunning jewel-toned garden.

Monochromatic

A garden color scheme doesn’t need to include multiple colors. In fact, going monochromatic and picking just one color is a fantastic choice, especially if you have a color you’re especially fond of. For Hooper, that color is red. “The dramatic effect of planting beds or borders of one color is also a fun challenge, and for years I have had a red color-themed bed that I adore,” she gushes. “It’s more upkeep because I have to replant Dahlias Bishop of Llandaff each season, but they look great with red peonies, Dianthus Telstar Scarlet, and Echinacia purpurea ‘Sombrero Salsa Red’.”

“Combining different blooms in similar colors—like light lavenders from herb plants such as lavender and thyme, with pink and white rose varieties or hydrangeas—adds depth and variety without overwhelming the senses,” the Giannetti’s note. As with any garden color scheme, decide on the mood you want to create for your garden, then choose your color accordingly. A blue garden with blue hydrangeas, Phlox paniculata ‘Blue Boy’ or Delphinium ‘Million Dollar Blue’ will be calm and serene. A yellow garden with Alchemilla mollis or Baptisia ‘Caroline Moonlight’ will be bright and cheerful.

Keep in mind that a monochromatic garden can include various shades of the same hue, so don’t be afraid to plan your purple garden with pale lavenders as well as deep purples that almost read black. “Even with a limited color palette, you can create a lot of visual interest through texture,” the Giannetti’s add.

Rewilding

If you’re interested in a maximalist color palette where anything goes, rewilding is a garden trend you’ll love. Also referred to as meadowscaping, this garden trend relies on native grasses and wildflowers being allowed to grow freely.

“This idea of garden chaos being positive is a big deal,” Hooper remarks. “If you want different colors, you can do that, and it looks smashing.” If you have dreams of running through your own wildflower meadow, see what many would typically consider weeds in a new light. “Whatever seeds are in the soil—let them grow,” Hooper suggests. “Then keep what you like, and pull out what you don’t like.”

You can learn what is native to your area by doing a quick search through the National Audubon Society. From there, notice what colors and plants you’re drawn to. Because rewilding is in fact a bit wild, your color palette can remain simple if that’s more your vibe. Stick with a monochromatic palette and choose flowers in the same shade, or select up to four different hues for a multi-color meadowscape.

A beautiful tablescape turns a dinner party into an event your guests won’t forget. Styling your table is very similar to designing an interior—it’s a layered mix of color, texture and personal touches. One outdoor living trend that has stuck out to me this year is bringing the indoors out. We’re collectively craving outdoor spaces designed just as thoughtfully as our indoor ones, which heralds an era of elevated outdoor dining. Summer tablescape ideas abound! The urge to tuck away paper plates and bust out the nice china is strong this season, and why not throw a dinner party with a swoon-worthy place settings?

Our Favorite Summer Tablescape Ideas

If dressing an outdoor table to the nines sounds intimidating, don’t worry. Tablescaping doesn’t have to be complicated or even fancy. Camille herself loves gathering around her backyard table with loved ones, and she’s not one for extra fuss.

Camille handpicked the following summer tabletops, and they’re all beautiful in their sweet simplicity. If romanticizing a dinner party is on your bucket list this season, read on for five summer tablescape ideas that are sure to leave a lasting impression.

Start With Linen

A beautiful tablecloth sets the tone for a cohesive table. It takes up the most real estate and is the backdrop for placemats, plates and cutlery—plus it’s very easy to make a statement with a bold color or pattern.

The mustard linen tablecloth is the star of the show here, and since linen is synonymous with summer, it’s the perfect choice for a summer tablescape. To recreate this look yourself, match your napkins to the tablecloth and pick a complementary color for your placemats. Warm pinks or brown go perfectly with mustard and create a cozy and inviting table.

Play With Pattern

Pattern play has been everywhere this year, and nothing screams summer more than gingham. This yellow gingham tablecloth sets the tone for a casual and playful dinner, with matching taper candles as a sweet touch. A pattern like gingham is timeless, and this mustard color easily transitions to fall.

For a maximalist tablescape, mix a gingham tablecloth with floral or polka dot patterned napkins and plates. For a simpler setup, you can’t go wrong with white dinnerware. Matching your napkin color to the tablecloth will make you table feel streamlined, or opt for more gingham in a complementary color. The Casa Zuma chairs here also deserve a shout-out. They fold for easy storage and are effortlessly stylish while remaining casual and inviting.

Keep It Simple

Summer produce is not only delicious but the fruits and vegetables themselves are stunning. Celebrating the season means savoring ripe tomatoes, juicy peaches, and sweet cherries. One summer tablescape idea is to showcase the beauty of the season. Let the food do all the talking! No need for fancy decor when a plate of citrus at the center of your table will do the trick. Pairing your produce with a classic white and blue color scheme will give your tablescape an elegant coastal vibe that is sure to charm. Pair a simple white tablecloth with blue and white plates, then finish off the look with blue linen napkins.

Decorate With Greenery

Another nod to the season’s simplicity is decorating your table with herbs and greenery. This tablescape was from a dinner party thrown by designer Jenni Kayne, and her menu centered around thyme. It just goes to show you don’t need to hire a florist or even purchase flowers for your table. Decorating with greenery found in your backyard or herbs from your garden make a beautiful statement.

Tying in your dinner party’s theme with the decor is also an incredibly thoughtful touch that doesn’t have to be expensive. If this is a summer tablescape idea you can get on board with, stick with neutral linens and tableware. Reach for creamy whites or soft oatmeal shades to really allow your greenery to pop.

Summer tablescape statement seating.

Statement Seating

I’m a sucker for statement chairs. Who else? A comfy woven chair is ideal for outdoor summer dining and can add a warm and rustic feel to your whole setup. A woven chair, whether it’s wicker, rattan, or cane will also give your space some added texture. The wicker chairs shown here look beautiful mixed with the surrounding greenery, the light peach tablecloth, and blue napkins and glasses.

Warning: if you’re not prepared to be massively inspired to take up a weekend project, turn away now. Nothing gets me to Home Depot faster than an image of a pretty outdoor space popping up on my Pinterest board. And, better or worse for you, I’m about to bombard your eyes with beautiful backyard landscaping ideas that will put a shovel in your (or your unassuming partner’s) hand in no time.

If you’re starting from scratch, backyard design is a huge undertaking—mentally, physically, and financially. Just take it from Camille, recalling her backyard plans: “Typically, we tackle one big project a year, and after 12 years of living here, our home is so much closer to our ultimate vision. Though I doubt we’ll ever really be finished.”

Tour Camille’s Backyard below!

However, no matter what type of space you’re working with, there are steps you can take right now (as in, this weekend!) toward designing your dream backyard. This leads me to an obvious step number one: you must first answer the question, “What is my dream backyard?”

A Formula to Determine Your Dream Backyard

Here’s how to do it. First, name your top three needs. How should your backyard serve you? For example:

 • Do you want a space that’s ready for hosting at all times?
 • Do you want to grow your own flowers or build a vegetable garden?
 • Do you need a big green lawn for kids and pets to play?
 • Is there a patio that needs tending?
 • Do you want to grill or cook outside?

Next, name your top three wants.

 • How do you want your backyard to make you feel? Relaxed, inspired, motivated, at peace, etc.
 • Are there any design styles you want to lean into? Curated, overgrown, Mediterranean, desert-inspired, etc.

After some soul searching, you might come up with something like this: “I need my backyard to serve my family by offering a safe and inviting place for my kids to play, an inspiring area to relax and enjoy a meal, and a cozy seating area for morning coffees outside. I want my backyard to lean into European vibes with native plants and vintage (yet sturdy) pieces so it feels like an outdoor oasis when I step outside.”

Now that you’ve determined your dream space, it’s time to get started. Ahead, I’m sharing 20 backyard landscaping ideas to make it happen. Filter each one through your parameters and have that shovel at the ready—inspiration abounds.

1. Terrace the Land to Make Full Use of a Sloped Lot

If your property has any sloping, lean into it by building the backyard on different levels. There’s not much you can do on a hillside without building terraced walls and bringing in a ton of dirt to fill them in. It’s a big job—but think of it as the foundation upon which your dream backyard will grow.

2. Create a Master Plan

When dealing with a large outdoor space, it’s important to start by creating a master plan that defines a purpose and use for every different area. You might want to carve out a space for dining, an area for your kids to play sports, or maybe you want to leave a spot to add a pool someday… then you can tackle each area in phases, with a vision for where you’re ultimately headed.

3. Frame Your Spaces (or “Rooms”)

If you have a number of different areas in your yard (patios, decks, pools, a garden, private spaces) it’s best to imagine them as separate rooms. Then lay out different materials like stones or shrubs to mark each area of the space. From there, it’s a matter of filling in with plants and furniture—which you’ll likely still continue to do over time.

4. Create an Outdoor Living Room

Speaking of spaces and rooms, the outdoor living room is likely where guests will find themselves lounging the most. So think of it as such! Choose comfortable furniture and various stools that can also act as tables for drinks or snacks. Keep an outdoor storage bin for necessities all year round—from cozy throws to bug repellents.

5. Consider Gravel Over Grass

Backyard landscaping ideas should have you thinking about mixing and matching outdoor textures. If mowing is the bane of your existence, consider laying gravel (or turf if you still require a green space). Depending on your style and needs, hardscaping some gravel paths might be the key to your dream design.

6. Create Pathways

As you’re thinking of the “rooms” in your backyard, consider how the spaces work together in terms of connection. Carve out a walkway—either with gravel, large pavers, or both. Pathways prevent that disjointed feeling and truly bring the design all together.

Backyard fire pit

7. Install a Fire Pit

One of our favorite design ideas, the outdoor fireplace cannot be ignored. When it comes to backyard landscaping ideas, there must be a focal point. It might be a water feature or a fountain—but we’re partial to the fire pit. From wood-fired pizzas in spring to s’mores in the fall, it’s just hard to beat the ambiance.

8. Carve Out Spaces for Lounging or Dining

If your outdoor living area doesn’t support it, a cozy spot for hanging out is a must. Keep in mind that it could (and maybe should) also pass as an outdoor dining area. This is where you’ll linger over everything from coffee and a good book to BBQ and cocktails. Bring in romantic café chairs or long benches to fit your vibe.

9. Make Privacy Pretty—and a Priority

It won’t be going out on a limb to assume that most people are going to want some privacy in their backyards. Whether it be a fence, wandering vines, tall hedges, or variations of shrubs, your privacy tactics can also support the overall design of the yard.

10. Work With Shaded Areas

If your yard doesn’t come with a topiary of trees (and perhaps even if it does), shade is crucial for optimal enjoyment. Consider a pergola or installing a porch where you’ll need a reprieve from the sun. But keep those sunny areas, too—especially if you’re considering a garden at any point.

11. Decorate With Planters in Containers

If you don’t want to hire a landscape designer, an easy place to begin is decorating with pots. Potted plants like succulents, greenery, or perennials can bring your yard to life. And—bonus!—it’s something you actually can do in only a weekend.

12. Use as Many Native Plants as Possible

First, find out what zone you’re in and then plant accordingly. Sure, you may want to plant all the Mediterranean plants like olives, lemons, and bougainvillea, but it’s risky to make those investments. Try buying the smaller versions of these plants you simply cannot deny so you can cover them if it freezes—and know you might lose a percentage of them each winter.

13. Plant a Backyard Garden

If you dream of building DIY raised garden beds, first choose an area of the yard that gets plenty of sun. Most vegetables and herbs thrive with as much sun as possible, so these are really happy. Then, consider installing drip irrigation. Drip sprinklers are pipes that run right under the top of the soil and are more eco-friendly since it deeply hydrates the roots without so much of the water evaporating into the air. You can even put them on a timer so that your garden gets watered both regularly and at the optimal time of day.

14. Hang String Lights

If you’re looking for a smaller, more affordable project, the answer is lighting. String lights are bang for your buck in terms of immediate ambiance and minimal effort. Even a small backyard can be transformed in just a few minutes with some simple lighting.

15. Make Space for Play

If “backyard” and “play” are synonymous for you but you’re trying to get away from a yard full of sun-bleached, forgotten toys—good news. All you really need for fun in the backyard is space and a few balls to kick around. Bring out the cornhole when you’re feeling competitive, install a pretty hammock, or hang a rope swing. Bet you’ll love it just as much as the kids.

The exterior of a shed

16. Put Up a Shed

The versatility of a shed is truly remarkable. Sure, they can provide extra storage space for outdoor tools and seasonal decor, but that’s just the beginning. Sheds can be transformed into reading or meditation nooks, home gyms, work spaces, and a place for hobbies like needlework or photography. Get creative and think about what sort of private space you’d love, then turn a shed into your own cozy retreat.

Gazebo in the fall

17. Charm with a Gazebo

Gazebos really make a statement. They can offer an additional spot in your backyard for relaxing or dining, while also providing additional shade. Deck yours out with a small dining room table and chairs for an intimate spot for morning coffee or a lunch date with a friend. Or set up an outdoor loveseat with lots of pillows for cocktails at sunset or a Saturday reading sesh.

Ornate wall fountain

18. Zen Out With a Water Feature

My parents recently installed a small fountain in their backyard that rests just off of their deck. The gentle sound of water rippling creates a calm and relaxing ambience. Water fountains are ideal for gardens and outdoor sitting areas, especially if the vibe you want to curate is chill. A fountain can also be an unexpected decorative feature—they come in a range of different styles and aesthetics from ultra modern to eclectic.

A matte black outdoor shower

19. Add an Outdoor Shower

An outdoor shower can come in clutch if you have a pool. Installing one would make it easy to rinse off, as well as provide a space for hosing off muddy pets or children. Even without a pool, an outdoor shower can truly be luxurious. Opt for gates, a stone wall or a wooden fence for privacy. Nothing beats the warmth of the sun or a view of the stars as you shower. Resort-style living, anyone?

Citrus slices on cutting board.

20. Create a Backyard Bar

If you’re looking for backyard landscaping ideas specifically for entertaining, a bar can take things to the next level. Whether you serve cocktails or mocktails, outdoor bars include discreet shelving for wine bottles, glassware, and cocktail shakers so you can have everything in reach. Add a few bar stools and you have an ideal spot for chatting over a glass of wine, or greeting guests from the patio. Cheers!

With longer days and the allure of well-deserved PTO, summer is the perfect time to infuse your home with color. 2024 summer paint color trends align with this year’s theme of making bold design choices and paint is a simple and cost effective way to dip your toes into a more daring interior. It also means paint can move beyond just the four walls of a room. “Adding color to a ceiling, cabinetry or built-ins, interior doors, front doors, shutters, and architectural accents unique to your home are great areas to make a statement,” Isabella Broglia, a color expert with Dunn-Edwards DURA, shares. Long story short? Paint is powerful.

This season, familiar hues associated with summer (think coastal blues and soft pinks) and richer tones like mustard and deep browns are steadily growing in popularity. We continue to move away from cool tones and stark grays and are embracing warm neutrals instead. Curious to know more? Read on for a deep dive into this summer’s paint color trends, according to designers and paint pros alike.

Soft Blues

Decorating with coastal blues is a no-brainer come June. Reaching for a can of soft blue paint is a fantastic way to welcome the season, and Broglia suggests painting with Dunn-Edwards DURA’s Marine Layer. “Reminiscent of the ocean and warm summer days, this misty, light blue hue is the epitome of the season in my eyes,” she says. “Channeling serenity and slower days, this hue is sure to be everywhere this summer.” No matter where you live, a dreamy coastal blue will infuse your home with the laid-back, casual vibes we all crave over the summer.

Pinks and Peaches

If summer inspires you to play around with color, you’re not alone. “During the summer months, we see a noticeable uptick in sales of brighter colors,” Nicole Gibbons, Founder of Clare Paint says. “Summer is the time when people are more willing to embrace their colorful spirit and therefore more likely to introduce more adventurous colors into their home.”

Gibbons specifically notes that brighter pinks gain popularity over the summer, which matches the season’s playful spirit. Summer is also the perfect time to embrace this year’s Pantone color of the year, Peach Fuzz, if you haven’t already. Bonus points for pairing pink and peach together!

Mustard

While you might think summer paint color trends are for pastels and brighter hues, richer tones are trending as well. Paulina Hospod at AhA Interiors was recently at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York and she noticed one particular color trend that’s sure to turn heads. “I have seen quite a bit of color interest in the muted or deep versions of mustard, amber, or pumpkin,” Hospod says.

Iantha Carley of Iantha Carley Interiors loves this shade and encourages her clients to be bold with their color choices this season. “If you are more fearless when it comes to color, don’t be afraid of using deep tones, particularly ones with yellow undertones,” she says. “One of my favorites is Ben Moore’s Dragonwell, which is particularly beautiful in a sunny room as it changes color during the day and evening. It’s quite remarkable.

Deep Browns

Rich browns have been trending all year, and Broglia specifically loves a shade that embraces two trends at once. “Lately, I’ve been loving the deep brown colors seen in Dunn-Edwards DURA’s Bourbon Truffle, which has a surprising punch of red,” she shares. “As the ‘unexpected red theory’ continues to grow in popularity, I think summer hues can mean more than just pastels, and this earthy hue is evidence of that as we reconnect with the outside world this season.”

Mauve

Deep purples like rich plums and amethyst shades have been popular this year, and Hospod is leaning toward lighter shades of purple, namely mauve, this summer. “I have seen a lot of mauve shades and Benjamin Moore’s Angelica is one of my favorites,” she shares. “I am overall drawn to purple undertones in many shades of lighter colors. Another lovely shade is Antique Pearl, slightly lighter than Angelica.”

Creamy Whites

Let’s face it, white walls are timeless. “By using a more neutral base, you’re allowing more freedom for play in other areas of your home,” Broglia notes. But not all whites are the same, and this year, cool tones are out and warm tones are in. Broglia’s white of choice? Dunn-Edwards DURA’s Historic White. “This sandy neutral white is the perfect base color for bringing a versatile summer style to life through furniture and design,” she says. “This color is great because it has proved to be timeless and lives beyond trends.”

Another option? Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace or Calm—both are Hospod favorites. “I use Calm whenever I need the room to look lighter and I don’t want to use white,” she explains. “It has great purple and pinkish undertones, it’s warm, and it matches well with other shades. It goes great with Chantilly Lace trims, with just enough contrast.”

Roman Clay

2024 summer paint color trends are moving beyond just shades and hues. Brittany Farinas, CEO + Creative Director at House of One is noticing a specific plaster finish is making waves in the design world. “The biggest paint trend we’ve been seeing is ‘Roman Clay’ by Portola Paints,” she says. “Everyone is using it. It’s like a matted Venetian-style plaster that is so versatile across different design styles.”

Roman Clay is a paint/plaster hybrid that is applied with a putty knife. It goes on smoothly and gives walls the appearance of stone, stucco or marble—very chic. It’s available in both light and dark colors, and truly is for every space. “It can work in a cozy cabin lakeside setting as well as a more organic, minimalist design aesthetic,” Farinas says.

]]>
Burgers on the grill, corn on the cob slathered with butter, and late night conversation around the fire pit are what summer dreams are made of. It’s the time of year to get outside! This season’s outdoor living trends are all grounded in the very simple idea of bringing the indoors out. The line between indoor and outdoor living is blurring, whether you’re working with a small patio or a large deck built for entertaining.

Now that the temps are warmer, you may be itching to give your outdoor space a refresh. For inspiration, I chatted with a number of designers and rounded up this year’s outdoor living trends. They range from luxury upgrades to whimsical color and patterns—read on for all the inspo!

Vacation-Inspired Decor

“If there’s one thing White Lotus taught us, it’s that we all need to live like we’re vacationing at a five-star resort, even if our patio is the size of a postage stamp,” Heather Goerzen, design director at Havenly shares. It’s official: vacation-inspired decor is having a moment. If you’ve already been embracing maximalism this year, this is your sign to bring it to your outdoor living space. “We’re seeing a trend toward tropical, resort-inspired outdoor furniture and decor, from nautical cabana stripes to verdant foliage prints. Bring the look home with cute cabana chairs, tropical plants (if climate permits), and of course, cocktails,” Goerzen continues.

Stripes on Stripes

Pattern play has dominated the year’s decor trends. Why not add a few to your patio? “If you’ve always toyed with the idea of patterns, the outdoors is a great place to explore them, especially stripes,” Goerzen explains. “Try adding stripes to your outdoor layout via throw pillows or an outdoor rug to create a warm and inviting environment.”

Not sure of the vibe you’re going for? Navy and white stripes will give your space a classic, nautical feel. Brighter colors will pack a punch. Butter yellow stripes would be cozy and adorable! Think of statement pieces like striped furniture and umbrellas for even more whimsy. This outdoor living trend is just plain fun.

Lush Plantings

When it comes to landscape design in 2024, it’s time for a go-big-or-go-home mindset. “Maximalism is all the rage, and flowers are a great way to integrate this into any outdoor space,” Goerzen says. Think lots of greenery, herb gardens, and pollinator plants for the bees and butterflies.

Adding plants to your indoor spaces instantly breathes life into them, and the same goes for the outdoors. It’s still important to infuse natural elements into your outdoor design. “Choose full, lush plants and garden beds instead of softscaping,” Goerzen recommends. “The look also translates easily across multiple design styles, making it simple to adapt to your space.”

Embrace Color

Neutrals will never go out of style, but 2024 is all about color. If you’ve been hesitant to add more color to your home, Georzen says the outdoors is a nice low-stakes place to experiment. “Try mixing and matching the color of your choice with different patterns to create the perfectly thrown-together look,” Goerzen recommends. Pillows and throws are great safe places to start. Not quite ready for vibrant, colorful decor? Dress up your deck with flowers or hanging pots instead.

Layered Lighting

Lighting sets the mood in our spaces, and outdoor lighting is now just as important as it is indoors. “Our homes are layered with lighting that I would define as either functional, decorative, or accent and so too are our outdoor spaces,” Brad Ramsey, principal and founder of Brad Ramsey Interiors says. “We accent trees, light pathways, and string party lights to make our patios just as inviting.”

In addition, small tabletop lamps are now gracing outdoor tablescapes more and more. The good news? They don’t require a plug. “We have all kinds of options for rechargeable lamps that can provide even more charm and warmth to our thoughtfully designed outdoor rooms,” Ramsey continues.

High Quality Outdoor Furniture

“There is a new fluidity between the indoors and the outdoors that has changed the outdoor furniture landscape,” stylist and interior designer Parker Bowie Larson remarks. “Instead of bringing the outdoors in with natural elements and performance fabrics, which has long been a trend, we are seeing brands bring the indoors out.” Ramsey agrees. “The desire for indoor/outdoor living that is integrated in look, color, and style means the lines have been blurred on what we would traditionally call outdoor furniture,” he says.

This means that outdoor furniture has recently gotten a glow-up. “JANUS et Cie recently launched a fully upholstered, modular sofa called Mattone that looks like it could also be in your living room,” Bowie Larson remarks. As you’re planning your summer dinner parties, don’t be afraid to think beyond Adirondack chairs and fold out tables. Instead, imagine how you might bring the indoors out. “I’m entertaining more and more outside—and even bringing our good china into the garden, setting tables designed to make people feel at ease, with a delightful sense of indulgence,” Bowie Larson shares.

Upgraded Performance Fabrics

If outdoor furniture has recently been upgraded, that also means outdoor fabrics have as well. “Even velvets can now make their way outdoors!” Eddie Maestri, Principal Architect and Creative Director of Maestri Studio exclaims. Ramsey says this aligns with the merging of indoor and outdoor living. “The patio is now an extension of our interior living space and with a wide variety of high-performance outdoor fabrics that are supple and stylish, you can easily flow from one space to the next in a seamless way,” he says.

Performance fabrics are designed for outdoor use. They’re easy to clean and are built to take some wear and tear. It’s exciting to find textiles like chenilles and tweeds made for outdoor use. “Outdoor fabrics have made huge strides in the past ten years and with new jacquard, velvet, and colorful patterned offerings, one could argue they are on par with the most luxurious indoor textiles,” Bowie Larson says.

Outdoor Kitchens

Dining al fresco is one thing, but Lauren Lerner, CEO and Founder of Living with Lolo has noticed an uptick in outdoor kitchens. “Outdoor kitchens expand your entertaining space, allowing you to cook and host while enjoying the fresh air—an extension of your home,” she shares.

Homeowners are moving beyond just a grill. Outdoor kitchens can now feature bars with sleek countertops, sinks, cabinets, and appliances like refrigerators. If you have your heart set on an outdoor kitchen, remember to be inspired by your home’s current style. Think about how your indoor kitchen can work in tandem as well. And be sure to invest in outdoor appliances that are built to withstand the elements as well.

Hanging Chairs

There’s something about a swing that feels nostalgic and wholesome. This year, Goerzen is noticing homeowners have moved beyond backyard hammocks. Instead, they’re choosing hanging chairs for their patios instead. “A hanging chair is a game changer in any patio layout, and is a stylish statement piece that plays well with other seating that serves as a comfy spot to curl up in,” Goerzen says.

Hanging chairs are made to lounge in, so be sure to load yours up with pillows and throws. Even if you live in an apartment, a hanging chair is a perfect statement piece for a small balcony. They make excellent reading chairs, and while they’re great nestled in with other seating, it also looks chic and stylish all on its own.

Mixing Old and New

With upgraded furniture and textile options, it can feel like you may need all new furnishings and decor to keep up with the year’s outdoor living trends. Amanda Khouri of Amanda Khouri Interiors disagrees. “Rather than sourcing every component from the same line or thinking that outdoor furniture all needs to match, I enjoy leaning into a mix of old and new, “ she says. This year’s interior trends are all about individuality and eclecticism, and Khouri is leaning in. “It’s nice to be able to mix and match pattern and color using pillows, cushions, and blankets to help an outdoor living area feel truly unique,” she says.

It’s safe to say that butter yellow is the color of the season. This creamy, near-neutral shade can be seen just about everywhere these days—from flowy sundresses, to cozy knits and delicate manis. And one thing I love about fashion trends is they almost always trickle into our interiors. Butter yellow home decor is currently making the rounds, especially as Grandmillenial style continues to be popular. This season is the perfect time to embrace this soft and creamy shade with enthusiasm.

Ahead, read on for a deep dive into all things butter yellow, and how to incorporate this sunny hue into your home.

More and more, homeowners this year are kicking white on white interiors to the curb and instead choosing to infuse their spaces with a little more personality and joy. With its warm tone, butter yellow is a shade that even those who love neutral color palettes can embrace.

There’s a collective shift from cool tones to warm tones anyway, in addition to creating more casual and inviting spaces as opposed to more formal living areas. Butter yellow ticks all of these boxes, and can instantly add a bit of whimsy and playfulness to your space. I dare you to not crack a smile as you peruse a room with pops of yellow.

Selecting the Best Shades of Butter Yellow for Your Home

There’s a reason butter yellow is trending and not a bold or bright shade of yellow. When you’re looking at different butter yellow hues for your home, lean toward the shades that are creamy, muted, and warm. Yellow on its own is vibrant and energizing, but butter yellow should feel relaxed and cozy.

Especially with paint, be sure to sample a few colors to see how they fare in your chosen room. In general, paint will look brighter once it’s on your wall and will shift with the light, so try a few before you paint your entire room.

Some of the best butter yellow paint shades to try:

The Best Colors to Pair With Butter Yellow

Butter yellow is versatile. It fits right into many different interior styles, from coastal to traditional. It makes a kitchen or living room cheerier, and is an excellent choice for a nursery or kids room. Deciding on your butter yellow color palette depends on the vibe and mood you’re going for.

Pairing butter yellow with white works well if you’re looking to create a warm and inviting space that also feels clean and elegant. Other pastels are a natural fit if you’d like a room with more whimsy and joy. Pairing butter yellow with pastel pink or lavender oozes femininity. Or a soft mint green or sky blue creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Interested in going bold? Think pink and opt for coral and fuchsia pairings. You could also lean the opposite direction and pair butter yellow with black or charcoal gray for ultimate sophistication.

How do I style butter yellow home decor pieces?

It can be intimidating to incorporate new pieces and colors into your home, especially if they’re trendy and out of your comfort zone. Start small by incorporating accents like pillows, throws, frames, or vases for pops of butter yellow. I’m especially loving painted trim, and I think butter yellow door trim in a bedroom or office would be a sweet touch.

If you’re looking to feature the color more, butter yellow cabinets will completely transform the look and feel of your kitchen. Because butter yellow offers a warm and inviting feel, featuring it in the kitchen draws out comforting associations of hot cups of coffee and baked goods cooling on the counter. Ultimate feel-good vibes.

A butter yellow duvet is a great bedroom swap for spring and summer, while bathroom accents like towels and bathmats will give your space an extra dose of sunshine that’s perfect for the season. Paint and wallpaper will also pack a punch. If you want to paint the walls but are nervous to do so, again: start small. There’s nothing more charming than a surprise pop of color in small spaces like a powder room, pantry, or closet. The hue will no doubt infuse joy into any space, so if laundry is your nemesis, don’t be afraid to give your laundry room a butter yellow makeover.

When I think of summers at home, a few things come to mind: sliced watermelon in the fridge, the scent of sunscreen on sun-warmed skin, and light streaming through the morning windows. The rhythms of life at home shift with the season as well—the days are longer, kids are home from school, and home becomes a retreat from the heat and humidity of summer. Most would say it’s the season to kick back and relax a little more than normal, and updating your home with this year’s summer decor trends is our favorite way to welcome the ease this season brings.

Featured image from Jodie Fried’s Home Tour.

This year’s summer decor trends reflect what we’ve been seeing all throughout 2024. We’re embracing all things big, bold, and colorful. It’s easy to see the influence pop culture is having on the present moment, especially if you’ve been listening to Cowboy Carter on repeat, and the general easy breezy, laid-back stylings that traditionally go so well with summer are there too.

There is truly something for everyone this season, whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist at heart. I chatted with a few experts and got their take on this season’s interior trends. Read on to learn what they’re seeing and loving this summer.

Book lovers rejoice: curating bookshelves at home is very much in this season. Bookshelf wealth was coined at the beginning of this year, and more and more, homeowners are mixing colors, textures and their favorite books to create personalized bookshelf displays.

“To create styled bookshelves with a warm and welcoming feel, continue collecting books you love over time and layer them with personal memorabilia, art, sculptures, and bud vases to curate a display [that’s] uniquely you,” Jacqueline Norrise, Founder of ADL Interiors suggests.

Western Charm

“I’m predicting a modified revival of the Western aesthetic this summer, where rustic charm meets modern sophistication,” Norrise muses. This makes total sense, as Beyoncé’s new country album is gracing just about everyone’s playlists this season.

Western style is no doubt making its way into our closets, as well as our homes. “Combining distressed leather and denim textiles with contemporary pieces can create a luxurious, yet warm atmosphere,” Norris explains. “Embrace the rustic refinement of this trend by incorporating natural materials such as wood and stone in art and sculptures to add depth and texture, and Western motifs in art, pillows, and throws.”

Organic Textures and Materiality

“Natural finishes like rattan, jute, and other weaves aren’t new, but they’re not going anywhere,” Heather Goerzen, Design Director at Havenly states. “Organic textures continue to reign supreme in summer 2024, mostly thanks to their relaxed, lived-in look that blend effortlessly with other furnishings and styles, whether it’s classic influences or a more modern twist.”

Audrey Scheck of Audrey Scheck Designs is no stranger to these materials and often uses them in her designs. “Rattan, wicker, and cane furniture infuses warmth and texture into spaces while maintaining an airy feel,” she shares.

We love natural finishes and organic materials, so this is a trend we can back wholeheartedly. Norrise recommends you be on the lookout for macrame and crochet this season as well. “Incorporating these handcrafted textiles reflects a desire to infuse our spaces with character and a sense of calm, adding warmth, texture, and an artisanal touch to any room,” she says.

Pattern Play

“This year, we’re noticing one clear trend emerging ahead of summer 2024: pops of pattern,” Goerzen states. “While pattern, in general, has been making a slow but steady comeback in the last few years —thanks in part to the rising popularity of traditional design—we predict that it will hit its peak this summer and continue into the rest of 2024.”

Whether you prefer stripes, polka dots or prints featuring exotic animals, this summer is a great time to infuse your personality into your space with some playful patterns you may not have thought to use over the past few years.

“Thanks to the design world’s collective love of all things mid-century modern and Scandinavian minimal, pattern rarely went outside the realm of subtle stripes or geometric motifs,” Goerzen explains. “But now, it appears we’re going all in—vintage-inspired floral and bold animal prints we wouldn’t have even considered five or so years ago are slowly going more mainstream. Nothing is off limits!”

Scheck agrees. “We’re particularly captivated by block prints and botanical motifs, adding a playful yet understated flair to any room,” she says.

Bringing the Outdoors In

If everything is in bloom during spring, summer is the season of continued abundance. Trees are lush and green, summer produce is bursting with color and flavor, and weaving some of that magic into your space is perfect for the season. Bringing the outdoors in and using lots of greens, terracotta and brown nature-inspired colors and patterns is definitely trending now,” Jill Steinberg, Co-Founder and Chief Operations Officer of Fine & Dandy Co. shares. “We’re also seeing lots of botanicals and landscape murals being incorporated into homes.”

“Nature is forever and always in style,” Goerzen adds. In addition to nature-inspired patterns and colors, don’t be afraid to incorporate indoor plants into your home if they’re not there already. Nothing livens up a space more than a plant.

Wall-to-Wall Wallpaper

2024 is the year of making bold design choices, so it’s fitting that we’ve moved beyond statement walls and are now embracing wall-to-wall wallpaper. “Wrapping a whole room in a wallpaper mural or in a bold pattern is becoming more popular than just a feature wall, as people want to create a room that feels immersive and layered,” Steinberg shares.

Whether you decide on a smaller, subtle print or a large one, putting wallpaper on every single wall will completely immerse your space in color and pattern—very clearly making a big statement. “I love the idea of creating a room that can transport you to another place or time and there’s no better way to achieve this than with wallpaper!” Steinberg remarks.

Bold Palettes

Fearless color palettes have been taking center stage all of 2024, and this interior trend is sticking around for summer. “We are seeing a continued movement away from all-neutral-everything decor as we head into summer 2024,” Goerzen says. “It’s all about embracing color, personality, and drama with more saturated spaces—particularly in upholstery and paint”

If you’ve been thinking of painting your home office a fun color or have been on the fence about buying that accent chair with a funky pattern, now is the time to go all in with your design choices. Not sure where to start? “Think tried and true blues, rich and sexy greens, alluring marigolds and ambers, and of course, the classic pop of red that’s dominating the fashion and design scene alike,” Goerzen suggests. “It’s a season for expression in all of its shades.”

If you believe Instagram, your home should look like this: curved-lined furniture, dusty blue walls, two accent chairs, and a plush throw blanket. This aesthetic may or may not speak to you, but its familiar presence on interior designers’ grids these days almost seeps into your consciousness. Of all the interior design styles, it seems that this is the look to go after.

Here’s refreshing news for the industrialists, bohemians, and coastal cottage lovers among us: Today’s design rules are endless, non-binary, and inclusive of it all. No matter what the ‘gram says, it’s all about mixing it up. In short: anything goes these days. The key is to lean into what makes you happy

Minimalist dining room interior design styles.

Of course, some guidance always serves. So to up your design lexicon and prove that a sea of looks exist for a room, here’s what to know about the top interior design styles—and how to pull from each.

Whether you love curved lines and dusty blues walls or want to paint everything in jewel tones, let this be your design guide to creating a home that’s totally yours.

1. Minimalist

Some call it ascetic, others bland, and many see this approach as a study of serenity and calm. However you describe this interior design style, one thing’s certain: Minimalism has had significant staying power. Simply put, a minimalist interior forgoes any extraneous decor accessories or added furniture to honor the essentials. Designers focusing on minimalist decor emphasize function, breathing room, and negative space. Everything has a purpose, whether it’s to provide comfort or beauty. The result is harmony and ease.

Key Attributes of Minimalist Design Include:

 • Sparse furniture that serves several functions
 • Very few added objects
 • Uncluttered negative space
 • Even-toned neutral colors or black and white
Japandi living room

2. Japandi

A blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design, Japandi merges two cultural aesthetics that share a love for nature and simplicity. Designers bring this look to life with natural hues and organic materials like wood, linen, and paper. Overall, the aesthetic offers an understated, simplistic vibe. As Laila Rietbergen, the author of Japandi Livingdescribes it, “less is more” regarding this calming design style.

Key Attributes of Japandi Design Include:

 • Understated and quiet simplicity
 • Rich woods in various tones
 • The use of multiple textures and tones
 • Organic shapes

3. Traditional

As its name suggests, Traditional interior design pulls from tradition—and history. Originating in the late 18th and early 19th century, Traditional roots come from the classic European decor readily found in period films and antique shops. This includes rich mahogany wood furniture with details, patinaed brass, old-world glass and ceramic decor, and ornate art. Comfort is critical with traditional design embellished with lively patterns and colors.

Key Attributes of Traditional Design Include:

 • Antique furniture
 • A substantial nod to French and English homes
 • Timeless décor that harkens back centuries
 • Decorative colors and botanical prints
Barbiecore interior design styles

4. Barbiecore

No other interior design style embraces pink in all its glory quite like Barbiecore. This aesthetic, which looks like Barbie herself morphed into a living room, has been taking over people’s social media feeds since the Greta Gerwig-directed film Barbie took over the zeitgeist last summer. But it’s not all pink. This design style marries jewel tones, bold graphic prints, and utter creativity. As Gifty Walker, director of merchandising for Joybird says, Barbiecore is “a reminder to keep expressing our unique style, no matter what age we are.”

Key Attributes of Barbiecore Style Include:

 • Golden accents
 • Contrasting colors of pinks, blues, yellows, and more
 • Curved lines
 • Ornate materials, such as marble
Bohemian modern living room

5. Bohemian Modern

In the last 18th and 19th centuries, the streets of Paris and London started seeing a wave of iconoclastic fashion. Rebellish creatives were embracing bright colors and loads of layers. This look eventually became known as Bohemian, a calling to the group of people from Bohemia, an eclectic region of former Czechoslovakia. Today the Bohemian aesthetic embraces a no-rules, brightly colored, expressive look. It’s all about mixing flea market finds with tons of color and rich textures. The “modern” in Bohemian Modern marks any design decisions that honor today’s lifestyles, such as updated cabinetry and sleek tiles.

Key Attributes of Bohemian Modern Design Include:

 • A marriage of bright colors, especially turquoise, gold, fucshia, and red
 • Lots of vintage and antiques
 • Global textiles
 • Prganic materials with patinaed metals

6. Scandinavian

Step into the home of a Swede, Finn, Norwegian, or Dane, and you’re likely to experience immediate comfort. The Scandinavian region is known for its subtle-yet-comfortable approach to interior design. Much like minimalism, everything in a Scandi home has a purpose, but there’s less restraint and more eclecticism. Natural colors and elements reign, as do gentle edges, bright whites, and the iconic tapered sofa and table leg. The look merges utility, beauty, and warmth.

Key Attributes of Scandinavian Design Include:

 • Soft edges
 • Light wood and natural materials
 • Thin, tapered furniture legs
 • Textural throws made of thick wool and soft cotton
 • Neutral grays, beiges, and creams

7. Industrial

Industrial design agrees with a building’s nature. The best way to describe this is to take, for example, the old factory buildings in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. When designers turned these hard-working buildings into loft homes, they honored the steel pipes and concrete walls by keeping them exposed. So much of industrial decor honors metal, brick, and concrete. High ceilings, large comfortable sofas, and grand art often soften hard edges and masculine tones. This is a mismatch of pieces that all work.

Key Attributes of Industrial Design Include:

 • Exposed steel, brick, and concrete
 • Hard edges
 • Big sofas and tables
 • Metal accents and lighting
 • Weathered furniture

8. California Rustic

The California Rustic aesthetic pulls from the west coast’s airy, breezy feel and marries with a bit of country farmhouse rustic. It matches California’s earthy vibes with a modern touch. The finished look is relaxed, effortless, and bright, emphasizing earthy hues and natural woods. Many often confuse this look with Minimalism and Scandinavian, which makes sense. The three design styles all share an affinity for the less-is-more approach. Also, because the Spanish colonial period has a substantial impact on California architecture, many designers weave in Spanish elements.

Key Attributes of California Rustic Design Include:

 • Exposed high beams
 • Lots of rough woods
 • Large windows to let in natural light
 • Neutral beiges and light earthy greens
 • Indoor plants
 • Simple antique and modern furniture
 • Natural materials, such as jute and linen

9. Coastal Cottage

Informed by the sea, the Coastal Cottage style marries the coziness of California Rustic with oceanic decor items and colors. Bright white often provides the base, which is then accented by driftwood, seashells, natural prints, and rope décor. Giant plush couches, often in light shades of linen, anchor rooms. There’s an emphasis on comfort and airiness.

Key Attributes of Coastal Cottage Design Include:

 • Sugary white paint
 • Plush linen couches
 • Navy and sky blue accents
 • Rope, driftwood, and seashell decor items

The post Meet Your New Favorite Candle—”Daybreak” Is All I Burn Now appeared first on Camille Styles.

It’s a big week at Casa Zuma—and for me, as a founder. After spending over a year developing our first candle, “Daybreak,” it’s finally here. It’s funny for me to think back—since way before dreaming up the brand Casa Zuma, I always wanted to make a candle. I’ve been candle-obsessed for as long as I can remember, and I always thought it would be the ultimate creative project to make exactly the fragrance that I want my entire home to smell like. (That is, California citrus, blooming jasmine, and salty air.) I wanted a candle that’s intense enough to pack a punch, look gorgeous sitting on my coffee table, and be completely non-toxic and clean burning. And now, I’m proud to say that Daybreak checks every box.

Daybreak Candle

California citrus, blooming jasmine, and salty air—lighting Daybreak ignites your senses with the sun-soaked energy of morning. Our clean-burning coconut and soy wax candle is hand-poured in Los Angeles, with a vessel inspired by golden rays and designed by our friends at Indoek.

When I started the journey of creating this candle, I was determined to make something that felt like, well, not just another candle! As someone who considers herself a candle connoisseur, I’ve tried them all. I have my favorites, but let’s be honest—most luxury candles look pretty similar, and it’s rare that I discover one with a truly unique scent. Which is why I’m so excited about Daybreak—when you smell it, you’re going to feel that spark that happens when you’re experiencing something for the first time.

daybreak luxury candle casa zuma_how to be more mindful

For those of you wondering what goes into creating a candle, let me start by saying—way more than I ever imagined. I never dreamed this process would take over a year start to finish, but it was that important that we get it right. The first step was the fragrance. We worked with our scent developer in Los Angeles to imagine a fragrance that’s fresh and clean, citrusy with floral notes, and feels like sunshine. I brought her some of my favorite fragrances that had elements I wanted to pull into our candle, plus references that I’d collected from my travels through the years. The blooming jasmine takes me right back to St. Tropez in 2014. The lemon and oranges are inspired by our trips to Capri. And that salty air and sunrise feeling is straight from our time spent in Malibu.

After several iterations, we knew we’d found our scent. It was really important that we make a completely non-toxic product, so we settled on a blend of natural coconut & soy wax that’s free of parabens, phthalates and sulfates, and a 100% cotton wick that burns totally clean.

The next step was the design of the candle vessel and box. I wanted all aspects of this candle to feel really special, so we worked with our artist friends at Indoek to create a sun-bleached vessel with our signature Casa Zuma seaweed cutouts. Indoek’s work is all about coastal creative culture, and our finished design reminds me of golden hour and the warmth of California sunshine. After deciding on countless other details (sampling, testing, packaging, shipping, etc.) we finally had our first Daybreak sample in hand.

My vision for Daybreak is a happy scent, one that ignites the sun-soaked energy of the best morning.

The fragrance notes:

 • California citrus
 • Lush jasmine petals
 • Wild cypress
 • Sun-soaked musk
 • Fresh earth

The candle facts

 • 60 hour burn time
 • 100% cotton wick
 • Cruelty-free and vegan
 • Non-toxic fragrances (free of parabens, phthalates and sulfates)

We also created an accompanying Daybreak playlist so you can truly awaken all the senses with the best vibes possible. Our candles are thoughtfully produced and hand-poured in Los Angeles, and our first run is a limited production batch of 500 pieces. They’re available now at Casa Zuma. I can’t wait for you to experience it (and tag me on IG if you get one!)

If you’re a fan of cozy interiors, you’ve most likely fallen for rattan. As you scroll through interiors on Instagram or even as you walk the aisles of any home goods store, pops of this warm, golden brown material can be found in everything from lamps, chairs, and outdoor furniture sets. At first glance, rattan may remind you of the effortless ease that comes with beachy or bohemian homes, but now more than even, rattan pieces are being incorporated into traditional and modern spaces as well. It’s hard to resist the laid-back beauty rattan exudes, which is why we’re seeing it just about everywhere these days.

Perhaps you’ve wondered though: what is rattan? Why is it all of a sudden so popular? And how can I style it in my own home? If you’re looking for a deep dive into all things rattan, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about this versatile and beautiful material.

Rattan coffee table

What is rattan?

First things first. Rattan is a hardy climbing plant native to Southeast Asia. There are hundreds of species of rattan palm, and they grow strong and tall—we’re talking hundreds of feet. Once rattan palm stems are harvested and their outer bark is stripped, the wood is sturdy and lightweight, making it an ideal material for making furniture, woven baskets, and other homewares. The different species of rattan come in a variety of colors spanning light tan, deep gold and reddish-brown. Once this durable palm is made into furniture, these high quality pieces are built to last if taken care of properly.

Rattan’s Defining Elements and Characteristics

Rattan furniture is known for being strong, durable, and beautiful. It has been around for centuries, and if you’re lucky, you can also score vintage rattan pieces in excellent condition. Rattan was especially popular in the 1970s and has been making its mark in the interior design world again, thanks to its eco-friendly nature and robustness.

“As an interior designer who values natural materials, rattan furniture is prevalent in our design plans. Its organic charm and tactile appeal add depth and warmth to any space,” Audrey Scheck of Audrey Scheck Design shares. “Rattan pieces add a textural layer to interiors and effortlessly blend with other natural elements like wood, stone, and linen.

How to style rattan

The Difference Between Rattan and Cane, Bamboo and Wicker

Woven materials like rattan, cane, bamboo, and wicker are all very similar, and are even used interchangeably—but are they all the same? Not exactly. At first glance, wicker and rattan could easily be mistaken for each other, but wicker refers to the weaving pattern of the material. Wicker is often made from rattan, but can also be woven with bamboo, willow, or synthetic fibers.

It’s easy to see the similarities between rattan and cane, because they both come from the same plant. Cane refers to the outer bark that is stripped from the rattan vine and is often used as accents in wood furniture, while rattan is the inner core of these vines. And even though rattan and bamboo may look similar, they are very different plants. Bamboo is a hollow grass that can’t bend or curve, whereas rattan is solid and flexible.

How to Shop for Rattan Furniture

Shopping for rattan pieces can be as easy as browsing the aisles at Target, or scouring your local flea. Due to the popularity of these pieces, you’re more than likely to see rattan furniture at thrift stores and consignment shops. If you’re looking for a vintage gem, Scheck recommends inspecting the quality of the rattan first and foremost. “When shopping for rattan furniture, especially vintage pieces, it’s encouraged to inspect for any signs of wear and tear, such as loose weaving or structural damage,” she says. If you want to be sure you have an authentic piece of rattan, it’s best to find a professional or expert. “Look for reputable sellers or dealers who specialize in handmade furniture to ensure authenticity and quality,” Scheck encourages.

It’s also easy to spot brand new rattan pieces, and Scheck recommends keeping sustainability top of mind. “When purchasing new rattan furniture, opt for sustainable sources and consider factors like warranties and return policies to make an informed decision on your purchase,” she says.

How to Style Rattan Pieces in Your Home

Lamps

“Rattan lamps can instantly make a vignette more interesting, and they are timeless enough to pair with nearly any aesthetic,” Scheck shares. Adding rattan lighting will bring additional warmth and charm to your living room, bedroom or office space, and can blend in seamlessly with other textures and materials. Try adding a rattan table lamp to any of the rooms in your home for a touch of elegance and charm.

Chairs

There’s something about a rattan chair seated next to a cream colored sofa that instantly creates a homey environment. It beckons you to relax and stay awhile. Whoa doesn’t want that in their home? Consider rattan chairs for your living room if you’re looking for added texture, or try including rattan chairs to an otherwise formal space (think dining rooms or home offices) for an unexpected dash of whimsy and playfulness. Keep it rustic with a faux sheepskin throw or plaid textile, or go with a soft blue or crisp white throw pillow to keep it beachy for summer.

“Whether it’s a vintage armchair or a modern coffee table, rattan pieces bring a sense of authenticity and coziness to a room,” Scheck states.

Side Tables

If larger rattan pieces like chairs or sofas feel a bit much to start, consider rattan accents like side tables. Incorporating too many rattan pieces may make your space feel a bit dated anyway, but using rattan with other materials, textures, and colors will add the perfect amount of contrast. Keep in mind that rattan comes in a variety of shades, from light beige to golden brown, so be on the lookout for a shade of rattan that works well with your other furniture and decor.

Beds

If there’s one single rattan statement piece to invest in, let it be a bed frame. Rattan looks best when paired with nature-inspired hues and calming bedroom color palettes fit in well with its natural beauty. Adorn your rattan bed frame with linen bedding, strew house plants around the room, and let plenty of sunshine in. All of these natural elements will complement the rattan, and will no doubt create a relaxed, cozy bedroom.

Cabinets

Since rattan is neutral, the design possibilities are endless for a striking piece like a rattan cabinet. Do you want your space to be coastal and beachy? Tuck a rattan cabinet among an oatmeal linen chair and a blue throw. Prefer a boho vibe? Store ceramics on your cabinet shelves, place a large leafy green plant next to it and include it in a warm color palette of pinks and oranges. Rattan even works with dark and moody walls, exposed brick or masculine textures like leather—a fantastic option, no matter your design preferences.

Sofas

Rattan is perfect for both indoor and outdoor spaces, and a rattan sofa makes an excellent statement whether it’s in your living room or back deck. If you’re thinking of adding rattan furniture to your outdoor living space, continue to style with opposing textures, just like you would inside.

“Mixing rattan with other materials like wood and patterned textiles will create visual interest and a layered look,” Scheck says. If you do decide on an outdoor rattan sofa, just be sure to keep it dry and out of direct sunlight. These preventative measures will keep the fibers from weakening under harsh rays, and save it from mold and warping as well.

Let’s begin with an ode to our senses. They’re amazing. At times (and when able), we can smell, taste, see, touch, and hear our way toward tranquility. A glimpse at an image, whiff of essential oil, or moment in a sound bath can relieve stress and transport us to a place of ease. The takeaway? When we treat our senses well, calm and relaxation is within our reach. This is so true in the context of interior design, particularly when it comes to the bedroom. By choosing calming bedroom colors, we can support our well-being and have better quality rest. Read on for some of most soothing—and beautiful—calming bedroom colors that ease the senses.

The Best Calming Bedroom Colors

The research speaks here. Over the last several decades, scientists have found cool colors pulled from nature—i.e., shades of blue and green and earthy grays—to evoke the greatest sense of ease. More recently, a British project dubbed The World’s Favourite Colour Project asked thousands of people across the world to link certain colors to how they made them feel. The prize for the most calming color was… blue. Specifically, navy blue. The color of the ocean and sky, blue is one of nature’s non-stimulating color that puts our mind and body at ease.

What are the most calming colors for sleep?

This is where it gets interesting. While blue reigns as the most calming hue of all, other shades that conjure images of sunsets and silvery lakes are also known to be excellent for inducing sleep. These include earthy greens, dusty soft yellows, light clay browns, soft oranges, and natural pinks. All of these calm colors are plucked from natural landscapes, which makes them ideal options for the bedroom. Green, especially, is known to diffuse anxiety and welcome harmony.

Which colors are not calming?

This can elicit a personal answer—and that’s because color is personal. How you respond to a hue is akin to how you may love or loathe a perfume or a film. With that said, shades of red are known to be stimulating and fiery, thus invoking alertness and proving to be a better color for the living room or kitchen. Still, it’s important to choose the bedroom colors that ease your senses. One person’s calm bedroom colors can differ from another’s.

If you’re not sure what hues to start with, look to these calming bedroom colors as inspiration.

Think of the California desert on a late August evening. It’s a tapestry of terra cotta earth that kisses the gold sunset. These calming colors bring exactly that into the bedroom.

Farrow & Ball Sulking Room Pink No. 295

There’s a gravitas to this hue that other pinks don’t have. Perhaps it’s the muted finish or the fact that it speaks to the desert. Whatever it is, this gorgeous pink is to be taken seriously.

Backdrop Pablo Honey

It’s like golden honey met with an autumn sunrise. Albeit it is bright, and even enlivening, there’s still an ease and calmness to this sunny hue.

This color is more than a white, more than a yellow, and more than a neutral. It’s all three combined—with the calmest of calm vibes.

Is it blue? Is it green? The verdict says it’s a little of both, which makes this color universally calming for any wall it touches.

One of my favorite little luxuries has to be fresh flowers. A small bouquet on my desk or kitchen table brings a smile to my face every time I look at them. I used to not buy them, simply because it seemed like a waste, but over time I’ve learned that that’s the gift of fresh florals. Their beauty is fleeting, so it makes every moment special. I always grab a bouquet with my weekly groceries at Trader Joe’s.

My love of grocery store flowers recently stumbled into my Instagram scroll as a reel from @a_trader_joes_florist popped up in my page. The video featured a gorgeous bouquet with fluffy pink garden roses that looked completely stunning, and way more elaborate than any bouquets I made myself. I was floored when I realized it was an entire page dedicated to Trader Joe’s floral arrangements. Instant follow.

Trader Joe’s Floral Arrangements: How to Design Blooms on a Budget

Rachel is the florist behind the inspiring account. Sharing her love of floral arranging on Instagram started as a hobby, and has now blossomed into a page with more than 200,000 followers. It’s amazing how she turns grocery store flowers into professional looking arrangements, and her goal is to encourage others to try it themselves. “Flowers are ephemeral, so some of the pressure to get it ‘right” is gone,’ she shares. “They’re not going to last forever, so just have a good time, because you’ll get to make another one. It’s a nice thing for day-to-day life.”

Rachel generously shared all of her tips and tricks for crafting beautiful Trader Joe’s floral arrangements. Read on for all things floral design—from picking, prepping, arranging, and keeping your flowers fresh.

Choosing Flowers

Get to Trader Joe’s Early

The early bird gets the worm, as they say, and Rachel suggests getting to Trader Joe’s right as they open to get the best flowers for the day. “My Trader Joe’s gets new flowers every day, so it’s helpful to get there as soon as they open,” she says. Check in with employees at your own Trader Joes and ask them when they get in their flower shipments and how often they refresh the floral aisle. “Trader Joe’s employees are generally very friendly and are more than happy to fill you in on when new flowers are coming in,” Rachel continues.

Browse With an Open Mind

While you may think the first step to floral arranging is deciding what kind of bouquet you’d like, it’s a little different when it comes to grocery store flowers. “I have a harder time if I go into Trader Joe’s with a specific assignment or idea,” Rachel says. “It’s a supermarket, so you never know what will be available.” Instead, it’s best to go into your Trader Joe’s with an open mind. Rachel suggests browsing the aisles without a concrete plan first, and notice what catches your eye.

“I usually start with a bunch or two that I like. Perhaps they look incredibly fresh, it’s a color that I like, or it’s a unique flower that I love. I start there and put that in my cart,” she states. She’ll then reach for other bouquets that complement the main flower. It’s a wonderful opportunity to let your creativity shine. Don’t be afraid to put a bunch of bouquets in your cart and mix and match them to see what looks good.

Color, Texture and Scale

Rachel has a rule of three she considers while browsing. “Color, texture, and scale are the three things I look for when arranging,” she shares. A great example of three flowers that encompass these are ranunculus, spray roses, and calla lilies. “The ranunculus are soft and delicate, the spray roses have more structure, and the calla lilies have the most structure. The sizing works, too. It gives you a fun range,” she says.

Rachel has made many bouquets with these three flowers, and they’re always a hit. “I’ve done arrangements of these in bright pink, deep purple, and bright orange and it comes together really well,” she exclaims.

Go Monochromatic

If you’re not sure where to start with your arrangement, go monochromatic. “If everything’s the same color, you can think more about the texture and scale as you’re beginning,” Rachel suggests. Be on the lookout for florals with similar colors like pinks, peaches or purples and don’t fret if they’re not exactly the same color. “Flowers are pretty! Your arrangements are never going to look terrible. It’s like anything else—the more you do it, the better you get. Keep having fun!” Rachel encourages.

Prepping Flowers

Remove All the Leaves

Before tossing your flowers into a vase, it’s important to prep the flowers first. Rachel suggests getting your flowers into water as soon as you get home and leave yourself plenty of time for preparing and arranging. “Prepping the flowers is the most time consuming part,” she shares.

Once you’re ready to prep the flower, the first step is to take off the leaves. “I take off all of them. You can leave some at the top if you like, but you should definitely take off the bottom leaves,” Rachel says. Letting leaves sit in water causes bacteria to grow and can emit a foul odor, so it’s best to toss them.

Trim the Stems

Trimming the stems at a 45 degree angle will keep your flowers happy and hydrated. If you’re placing your flowers in a vase, Rachel has a hack for making sure you trim them at the correct height. “If you flip the flowers upside down next to your vase, you can see where the stems line up at the top, and you can then trim them there,” she shares.

While you’re trimming, Rachel also suggests keeping the stems and leaves right over the packaging the flowers come in. “It might be obvious, but open the packaging and keep the trimmings over the plastic. At the end of your arranging, you can wrap it up and toss it for easy clean up.”

Arranging Flowers

Start on the Outside and Work Your Way In

When arranging flowers for a vase, Rachel suggests starting with the flowers that lay at the edge of the vase and work your way in. “When I start filling in the middle, I’ll keep those stems a little longer, to create a dome shape at the top,” she explains. Once your flower bouquet starts to take shape, Rachel uses greenery to fill in the holes. “I save greenery for the end as a small accent. Traditional florists will typically use greenery as a base for the flowers to sit in, but I personally like less greenery and more flowers.”

Be Gentle With Stems

Rachel will also make bouquets as gifts for loved ones, and even has a tutorial for trimming a paper Trader Joe’s bag to use as wrapping. For these kinds of bouquets, she arranges flowers on a flat surface. “I’ll place two flowers in a criss cross shape, then put one flower in the middle and I’ll continue layering them,” she says. “You have to be gentle. The stems do get tangled since you’re crossing them over each other. If you have a tulip stem, or something more delicate, you don’t want it to get crushed.”

Taking Care of Your Flowers

Refresh Every Two Days

Flowers are living things, and taking care of your bouquet will help keep them fresh and blooming for as long as possible. Rachel suggests checking in with your flowers every 48 hours. “Change the water and trim the stems every two days—it’s super important,” she says. This is also a great time to pull certain flowers that may be struggling. It’s normal for certain blooms to last longer than others, and removing the ones that are worse for wear will help the fresher flowers last a bit longer.

Add Flower Food

Your flowers will come with a small packet of flower food, and Rachel highly recommends it. Just don’t use it all at once. “Flower food works. You don’t have to put the whole packet in at once,” she shares. Instead, add a little bit every time you change the water and trim the stems. “I’ve found that adding flower food doesn’t affect how long the flowers last, but how much they open,” she states. “If you put the flower food in, the blooms will open more, even though they’ll last about the same amount of time without it.”
